Goodbye cats!!
It really works. I love it. no more cats.My garden appeared to be the local public convenience for cats. Sickening. The final straw was when I found the dismembered remains of a pigeon outside the back door.I first tried the cat scarer with batteries. It worked for a couple of weeks, but the batteries went flat because I had it on full power. The instructions do say that on full power they wont last so long. I realised it had stopped working because the piles started to reappear. I decided to reposition it so I could use a mains adapter. Not a single pile since I switched it on. The new position doesn't cover the whole garden, but the whole garden has been clear for several weeks. I think it stops them passing through, they had actually worn a walk way in the grass as they went from one garden to the next. The first morning I put it out I knew it was working when I saw a cat crouching behind a tree stump, look very confused and continuously glancing from side to side. It then turned around and went the way it had come. The distance of coverage appears to be significantly more than the literature. It hasn't deterred the hedgehogs, which is a good thing.I'm going to give it a few weeks to see if the front lawn becomes clean because cats don't walk through any more, but if not I will get another for the front. Its over a fence so no way the actual beam can reach there, but you never know...I bought the mains adapter from the same people. It came with a very long (low voltage side) extension lead which means I don't have any trouble positioning the scarer. The low voltage cable is slim enough to fit through a wall vent or through a window, under the seal, and still close the window.

Not as effective as some say and I don't know why (I've set it up correctly)
I had cats fouling my lawn on a regular basis and bought this device to deter them. I didn't see a cat for a week or two and no more mess until yesterday morning when one cat didn't seem to be deterred and shat on my lawn. I don't know if this is a one off or if the cat has got used to the device and it's no longer effective. Either way I am very disappointed after spending almost £50 on buying this together with a mains adapter.I am now researching alternatives or supplementary deterrents. Unfortunately some of the more effective alternatives appear to be spray jets which need a water hose to be permanently connected.

Same issue with two of these
After 17 years of service my old Cat Guard ultrasonic deterrent failed and I needed to replace it. You can no longer buy these so I needed an alternative. The same ultrasonic design but with a PIR seemed great - so I purchased one of these Pestbye® Advanced Cat Repellent - Ultrasonic Cat Scarer and Deterrent. When I received it and hooked it up to a suitable PSU I was initially impressed when I turned it on. It immediately sounded the ultrasonic sound that I am used to hearing (high pitched squeal) and the red LED illuminated. It pulsed the sound for 5 times and then, I assume, dropped into PIR mode where it will then only sound when it detects movement/heat source. When it detected a heat source (me walking in front of it) the unit started clicking but NO ultrasound (high pitched squeal) was emitted. I left it for a while and came back and it did the same thing. Some random clicks but NO ultrasound (high pitched squeal).I pressed the test button and then the ultrasound (high pitched squeal) started and continued until I turned pressed the test button again to turn it off.So it looks like there is no issue with the actual part that deters the cats, the ultrasound, but the PIR function to detect cats then fails to activate the ultrasound part.It is interesting to read other reviews and many people refer to the clicking but don't mention the high pitched squeal of the ultrasound speaker when in test mode. This could be that many adults as they age lose the ability to hear high frequency sounds, but I can certainly hear it and consider it too loud to be left in test mode all the time. This was one option I considered as my old Cat Guard just constantly emitted the high pitched squeal, although it was not as loud.I did wonder if this might be a one off fault so I bought another Pestbye® Advanced Cat Repellent - Ultrasonic Cat Scarer and Deterrent. This one did exactly the same thing - no NO ultrasound (high pitched squeal) was emitted when in PIR mode and activated by a heat source. Just some random clicks. The ultrasound part worked fine in test mode.So I am concluding that these have an inherent fault with the PIR activation. Either that or all the remaining faulty Pestbye® Advanced Cat Repellent - Ultrasonic Cat Scarer and Deterrent are doing the rounds in Amazon. Both the product boxes I received looked like they had been handled many times. Now to find another product as the neighbours cats are starting to return to our garden!

Stops most cats
These really work but take a little trial and error to find the right coverage. We bought 1 and had an instant reduction in feline visitors to just 3 cats - we were getting loads and they were killing birds attracted by our bird table, feeder and bath. We discovered that 2 cats were using the very edge of the garden to skirt round the sound coverage. And one cat seemed to take no notice of it at all. We bought a second one and positioned them so that the beams hit both side fences and the end of the garden. They also have 2 settings and we turned both to the higher setting. This stopped the 2 cats using the sides and also kept the last cat at the far end of the garden mostly behind thick bushes. We sprinkled copious amounts of very cheap pepper from a local garden centre behind the bushes and now have no cats visiting us at all.So overall it's fiddly and a little expensive but is worth the time and effort as we are now finally cat free. We use the mains adaptors for both units.
