Works great, works in Linux
This neat little boxed solved everything. It's only about 2.5" x 2" and you can mount it on the wall with velcro Command Strip picture-hangers, if you're going to use it in a permanent set-up like I did. It's driverless and was plug-and-play for me using Ubuntu 14.04.I bought a Lenovo SFF PC for $50 to use as a media center but I was stumped when I couldn't get the computer to output audio digitally via displayport. Since the whole point of the computer was to be able to listen to my music, I was pretty bummed--who outputs audio to their receiver by 3.5mm analog?? Not me. But this device came to the rescue: you can output audio digitally from virtually any computer, since it only needs to be USB-enabled. There is no crackling, or background noise, even at high volumes. I can't speak to the validity of the claims that it supports 5.1 surround and the highest bitrates, as my receiver doesn't support them, but for most people I would suspect this gets the job done, at a great price.

Sorry, no DTS or DD output
This device did not produce a DTS or DD audio stream and was returned. I ended up going with an HDMI audio extractor (also here on amazon) and that worked. It was the only solution that worked. I tried several USB based solutions and none of them produced a multichannel encoded audio stream. This product looked like the pictured device but was not labeled HA-INFO. It was Labeled PHIREE U2. It looks shorter and wider than the PHIREE U2S that I ordered prior. The U2S claims to be an upgrade over the HA-INFO but it is not clear how or why.

This one can do 5.1 audio track
This is exactly what I need. I have an older Anthem Statement pre-pro that does not have USB input. This one convert USB audio to coaxial. And more important, it can handle 5.1 audio track (AC3, DTS). I had the muse but it can only do PCM 2.0 stereo only.Physically, it looks great and has a nice shape :) The USB cable seems to be made of high quality. The coaxial output gets lose and lost the audio sometime. It does seem to securely fit the monster cable. I'll need to change the cable. But this is the first time I see a RCA cable that is not getting tightly fit.Sorry this does not work with Ubuntu. It can't handle 5.1 audio track on Ubuntu. One star off.One star off because it does not output 5.1 audio from windows 7 playing vlc.

Beware! Don't buy this!
Beware. This is a fake product and don't believe on false reviews. It came without drivers and never worked. It only supports 2 channels. They only answered my emails when I threatened them to post a bad review, which I did after all, because I never got any sound from it and the product is not as advertised! When I inquired them about the real number of output channels they just stopped answering the emails.

Perfect for my needs.
I'm using this to play bit-perfect CD rips from my raspberry pi. I'm using the Toslink output for electrical isolation from my hi fi system. On the pi, I'm running Raspbian. I just connected this, rebooted, and it showed up. I then used alsamixer to set the master volume at 100%. For playback, I'm using vlc, with the ALSA audio output module configured to use the "PHIREE U2, USB Audio IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output" device. Finally, "Replay preamp" is set to 0.00.The way I know it delivers bit-perfect output @ 44.1 kHz is that my DAC correctly detects HDCD-encoded tracks that I ripped to FLAC. I don't know about any other sample rates, however.BTW, I'm still using a pi v1 (model B rev 2). It's borderline for this application (and I'm running vlc remotely, via X11 - don't like the HTTP interface). This might be the reason I've been waiting for to pull the trigger on an upgrade.

Excellent product
Quick and easy way to get a clean SPDIF signal out of a laptop (desktop as well). Thinking to get one more...

Great Sound Card Upgrade.
Used the SPDIF and Optical cables to connect to my Onkyo and Denon receiver and the USB on the other side to connect to the Desktop and Laptop to access the receivers' internal DAC to listen to streaming music subscriptions.
