I have to manually move each one out of the way -difficult. Operator error?** A: Hello, make sure that the dehydrator is level and the shelves are pushed all the way to the rear of the unit. That's important otherwise they will prevent the front window cover from sliding up. If when moving the unit to set it in position the shelves move forward, just tip the dehydrator up in the front and they should slide back out of the way. BTW, congratulations on purchasing the Magic Mill dehydrator! I say that because as far as I'm concerned it is one of the best available today. I make delicious beef jerky, cut a 1/4" thickness, in 2.5 hours! in my kitchen. That is pretty hard to beat! The design is perfect in every way. When I use it, I set it on our kitchen range and because the dehydrators output is at the top of the unit I just turn on the exhaust fan in the range hood and the smell is never detected in the house. I bought this after having a round one with plastic trays, trying to get away from the plastic. This one has metal trays, but the outside is plastic. I am okay with that as I am fairly new to dehydrating, and if it's something I find myself doing a lot, I may invest in a completely stainless steel unit. As a beginner, this unit is PERFECT! Lots of drying trays and best of all, it runs SUPER quiet!! It's not too big, or heavy, but storage could be a challenge as it is about the size of a small microwave, but it is easy to carry around. I love the rectangle drying trays as I want to dry some items that are liquid, so I can purchase silicone trays with lips that will fit, I had a hard time finding trays like that for the round unit.
