The vinyl smell is very very mild (much less than I was expecting); I just put them outside for a day and wiped them down once. I am using these to pad the baby's playroom (he is trying to walk now) and plan to eventually use them for the home gym later. The edges of the alphabet foam floor tiles we initially used have too much contrast and edges to interest our inquisitive boy; he kept trying to pick up the edges and eat them so we were looking for something that he would ignore.
