I just kept staring and repeating, “Um wow, these are indeed gigantic safety pins!!”.The tips are not particularly sharp and so may struggle to pierce a wide variety of materials. Your satisfaction with these will depend on how you plan to use them. With some effort I was able to slide these into one layer of a canvas tote bag. But due to their wide gauge, upon removal they leave a large and gnarly hole—that’s kInda a ‘no duh’ but it means you don’t have a lot of room to experiment on fabrics. Should your desired project be a permanent or strictly utilitarian one, unlike my more temporary and ornamental goal, I doubt this much matters. But they are heavy duty so beware of sag but, to repeat, they're not very sharp.The tension, in terms of opening and closing these, is pretty fierce; it requires some real force and so could be potentially difficult to handle. My 74 yr old mother with arthritic thumbs managed just fine and my hubby found it child’s play. Yet the first time I was playing around with them I gave myself a horrid blood blister—I got pinched, pinched but good. Be careful!The color is a dull silver, these aren’t the same super shiny finish you find on standard pins. Mine arrived odor-free and with no obvious manufacturing lubricants. All 8 are operational and mainly smooth. A few of them are slightly jagged on the open side of the head due to the metal being pressed in and wrapped under; nothing too crude but it isn't that smooth perfection we're used to in smaller sized safety pins. I was looking for pins that the end was covered as i use them to pin drying towels on my show dogs and they bite at them. The open ended pins are dangerous.
