Review: Good product - I’ve used this product to make buttermilk bread in a bread machine for over ten years. It’s also good for other recipes. And you can use it when you want to soak chicken in buttermilk before cooking. The container I received yesterday smelled strongly of chemicals from being shipped with non-food items which reeked of chemicals. It’s likely that the chemicals off-gassed during shipping and transferred to my food items in the same box. I might have to throw this container away because it’s cardboard and it can’t be washed thoroughly to get the chemical odor off. But I will continue to purchase and use this product because it’s so handy. And it can be stored for awhile in the fridge. It’s cheaper than having to buy fresh buttermilk on a regular basis.
Review: Much more convenient than liquid because there is no waste. - I usually buy liquid buttermilk and the usually end up throwing part of it out.

A: Yes, I have used it for a chicken marinate..Worked fine!

A: The shelf life is 4 years. Store it in the refrigerator after opening. If you live in an especially humid climate, or your refrigerator has a fair amount of moisture, you could put the entire container inside an airtight bag, and store that in either the refrigerator or freezer.

**Q: Where is this product made? (Thanks.)**
A: According to the website of Sacofoods.com, all of their products are made in Wisconsin.  The company was started in the mid 19th Century in Madison Wisconsin.  Their production and warehouse facility was moved to Middleton Wisconsin in 1995.

**Q: How do you thicken powdered buttermilk for something you don't cook, like salad dressing?**
A: You are supposed to add it to any other dry ingredients, like flour if you are baking, but for salad dressing I would mix in any other seasonings with it, making sure there are no lumps, then a little of the liquid and gradually add more until it is gone, or else make it according to the directions as buttermilk.  On the package, it says that 4 Tablespoons to 1 Cup water will make 1 Cup buttermilk to make it thicker, just add less water or none at all.  You can divide as necessary. I usually buy liquid buttermilk and the usually end up throwing part of it out.

Many of my bread recipes call for buttermilk, but it's not my choice of casual drink. I tried this powder and tasted it after mixing it in water; it's pretty good. I've found that warming the water and using a corded hand held mixer gives the best results, though one would argue that it might not make much difference in the dough. My breads, with this in them, taste better and have a softer, firmer texture. For some reason, not available locally. I might try them in doughnuts.
