It is real leather. Very soft on the chinrest, perfect height for the shoulder rest. Would be great for someone with arthritis or neck and shoulder problems. That's why I bought 2.WARNING!!!!!Newbies write reviews, I've been at this for years. It simply slips on the chinrest. The guy that broke his chinrest shouldn't be playing violin, raising children, or writing reviews.DO NOT leave it on your violin in the case. I do not play beginner instruments and you will do irreparable damage to your violin. The lid setting on the elevated instrument will cause the bridge to warp, the sound post to loosen and the bass bar to separate, all of which will cause cracks in the seems and the top plate.If a person is so lazy that tuning a new instrument, or removing a shoulder rest when the violin is in the case is an issue, just give your violin away now and save yourself the frustrations of not being able to learn.
