A gentle press of the big red button does the trick. To program, just turn it on, aim it at your remote, press the function button you want to copy from the remote, and return the button to off on the Smash Mute. A 5-second project at most. I actually ordered a second one so that both my wife and I can mute all of those ridiculously loud commercials that nobody wants to hear anyway. **Q: Can you program it for something other than Mute?  Say like "Power" on/off?**
A: Yes. Any function on your TV remote can be copied by the Smash Mute. We have one programmed to make the TV sound mute and another one programmed to use the last channel. So when the commercials come on I tap the mute to eliminate all the screaming and nonsense. Then I use the other one to ping back and forth between a couple of channels I like to watch. It makes things easy. This is a fun product. Cheers!

**Q: My parents unhooked their TV equipment when they had their floor replaced. Now Smash Mute isn't working. Anyone know how to re-set it?**
A: First make sure the Smash Mute has batteries in it. Then, flip the button on the bottom of the Smash Mute from "Use" to "Learn." Now, point the factory TV remote at the bottom of the Smash Mute and press the mute button on that factory remote until the red light on the Smash Mute blinks. Then flip the button back from "Learn" to "Use." That's it!

**Q: We have a smash mute & got a new tv and we followed the steps to program it and it did not work. we changed batteries too! what do we do?**
A: I don't know. I know that it is not well-made I had to go back in and re-solder some wires and it's been working fine ever cents. PS taught my dog how to mute the TV.

**Q: Will the smash mute button work on all my television sets ?**
A: It will work on whichever one it is programmed for. So if you program it for your living room tv it won’t work on tour bedroom tv unless you retrain it. It works on all models i have tried EXCEPT one that had a “half mute”.

I hate listening to advertising. It's a huge pet peeve of mine. My husband tunes everything out and doesn't always notice when ads are on so he doesn't always mute the TV when they come on. Sometimes he will turn the volume down, but I can still hear people talking. I asked for one of these for Christmas, and then my birthday, but apparently no one wanted to give me the satisfaction of smashing my fist down on a big red button to shut people up. So I bought it for myself and it works like a charm. It took almost no time to set up. Nothing at all like trying to program one of those universal remotes and having to go through a lot of codes or something. Just point your remote at this while it's on "learn" mode, push your remote's mute button, switch this off of learn and you're good to go. Now I just have to learn to use finesse and tact so I don't turn off the volume on programs someone else is watching that I'm not interested in.
