Throw these away. Use metal bolts that are long enough to get into the wood, but don't tighten all the way. Oh, they say that painting these voids the warranty. I said, "So what?" and painted them anyway. They look great. Engineering wise, these shutters were terribly made. But...they last...they're good looking on the house, and I enjoy them... AFTER the modifications I made. I wrote the company and told them what I had done...they never responded.
