## Description

'Still seen as the classic games collection' – English Chess Federation 'It is a work of genius' – The Compulsive Reader One of the most important chess books ever written, reissued in celebration of a chess genius, Bobby Fischer. The American takes the reader through 60 of his games, describing his thoughts, the intricacies behind his and his opponent's strategies, the tactical justification of moves and the psychological battle in each one. You'll find beautifully simple positional play by out-of-this-world combinations that are just breathtaking. Fischer played nearly all of these games as a grandmaster so they are at the very highest level, but his lucid commentary makes every move and idea both accessible and understandable, meaning that every player will learn huge amounts from this book. It is an essential for each chess enthusiast, competitor and professional alike. The controversial alterations that were made to Bobby Fischer's words in the last edition have been omitted in this book, so only the author's own words are expressed, giving a true insight into one of the most gifted, troubled and controversial minds of the 20th century.

Review: One of the greatest chess books ever. - I got this book, primarily to see the killer Rf6 tactical shot against Pal Benko. Back when i first started out, i thought he gave up his rook for nothing, but now I saw what fischer was up to. The f7 pawn is blocked and cannot go to f5, and if the rook is taken, fischer would play e5, with the unstoppable mate on h7 to follow. Unless nakamura proves me wrong, i doubt another American will win the world title again as nakamura threw away a couple draws against Vidit at the candidates in toronto earlier this year, and missed out by half a point. Fabi threw away the win when he missed an opportunity to win nepo's passed pawn and missing out on forcing tiebreaks vs gukesh.
Review: The Book and I - Hm... When I first decided on aquiring this literary masterpiece, I was quite under the impression that there would be a higher annotation:move ratio. I was wrong, but perhaps that is a good thing. There is a plethora of chess enlightenment within the pages. Knowledge isn't spoon-fed to you, as in many lower-level books, but there are excellent annotations which let us peek into the mind of a chess legend. A chess legend whom, if you are reading this page, you probably adore. The games are ones which Bobby Fischer considers memorable, so therefore they must be pretty great, right? They are! Still, as I mentioned, the annotations aren't spoon-fed to you, so you won't be getting anything out of simply playing over the moves really quickly and glancing at the annotations. You actually have to sit in front of Fischer's opponent and contemplate the moves through Fischer's eyes. C.S.Purdy once said,"If the student forces himself to examine all moves that smite, however absurd they may look at first glance, he is on the way to becoming a master of tactics." I quote him, because, a lot of Fischer's moves come out of nowhere. When going over Bobby's games in endeavor to guess which move comes next, calculating the bizarre moves is beneficial. It's an excellent book if you are a dedicated chess player. Casual chess players won't get nearly as much out of it. In other words, if chess is your hobby, you won't get as much out of it. If chess is your life, then stop reading customer reviews, and just go ahead and purchase the book!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Entertaining

Very instructive, even amusing at times. His analyses of possible lines are impossible to follow without playing them out on the board, at least for mortals like me. Can he really see that far ahead? I guess a world champion can. The position is shown fairly often, so it's easy enough to keep up while playing through the games, and it's fun to think, "What would I do?" We even agree, once in a while. I prefer the notation for the moves in Alekhine's book, where they used capital letters for the pieces instead of the little pictures, which don't show up very well on my old Kindle, but are fine on my Samsung phone. A very good book for the chess student or fan.
