    More cost-effective than fountains

*by C***R on Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2013*

After decades of being free of weeds or grass, the pond that we share with a couple neighbors became clogged with very fine grass that floated near the surface. This, in turn, produced some stagnation. The proximate cause of the problem seemed to be a succession of droughts that nearly depleted the pond of water and allowed grass to grow in large areas. When the water level rose, the grass proliferated (another contributing factor may be runoff from one of our neighbor's heavy use of lawn fertilizer). After consulting various online resources, I decided to use what is termed a "mechanical" method of control, namely, raking out the grass in the part of the pond on my property. This avoids the use of herbicides that would be harmful to fish, frogs, and turtles. As daunting as it seemed initially, it has actually required less time than expected and once the extracted grass dries up on the banks of the pond, it becomes almost weightless and can be compressed and put into yard waste bags for recycling.Although raking helped to clear out the pond, the water remained murky. Online resources consistently recommended aeration as the means of addressing this problem. My original plan was to purchase a pump that would float in the pond and provide aeration by means of a fountain. This approach would, of course, have the added benefit of the aesthetic effects of fountains. I quickly learned, however, that such pumps consume quite a bit of electricity, on top of an entry-level price around $500. In light of this information, I decided to go the route of linear aeration. The Easypro kit includes a 45-watt pump, sturdy tubing and diffusers, and all the connectors required for installation. My only complaint is that both types of hose clamps included with the kit show some signs of rust after 2 months of use (the pond is fresh water, but is located near the ocean). Also, the literature included with the kit provides one set of instructions for the kit and one for the compressor. The kit instructions state that "The compressor must be protected and housed from the elements." The compressor instructions describe it as having a "Waterproof enclosure--can sit outdoors without damage." My approach has been to protect it rain and shelter it from the sun; however, I would be reluctant to place it in a confined space due to heat build-up from the operation of the pump and exposure to the sun.The pump is located on the edge of the pond with two lines of tubing supplying air to the diffusers. You can see pictures on the Easypro website (and the customer image added to the Amazon product page) to see the effect on the pond surface. In contrast to a fountain that aerates by pumping water into the air and disturbing the surface, this type of linear aeration system pumps air into the water, producing bubbles and ripples on the surface.Within several days of using the pump on a 24-hour basis, the water started to become clearer, although it continues to have the light tea color of all ponds in our area due to the decomposition of leaves and other vegetation containing tannins. So, bottom line, the pump is not the complete answer to pond water problems, but a useful component in a broader response.

    I would NOT recommend it.

*by K***N on Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2017*

I have had this near my pond for the past 3 months. No problem. I would recommend it.Review update: Even with proper care and coverage the pump has been running very hot and shutting itself off for the past year. I continued to use it because I cannot afford to toss out $400 every year. It has now been 2 years 3 months. The motor still runs but doesn't have enough pressure to push air in less than 6 inches of water. It's pretty useless now.The tubing has held up well for the past 2 years. The aeration bubbler pieces... they lasted 6 months before breaking apart. If you are able to spend $400 yearly then this is a good pump for you. Myself, I will try a different brand this year and hope for better results.

Lasted less than 1.5 months running under cover

*by J***Y on Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2016*

I got it in may, but didn't have pond up till July. Ran one and a half months. Checked filter weekly and it was always clear. Had it in the shade under cover. The pond had 2 lines into the deep end 9 feet deep, which according to literature saros it could handle it. Got plenty of bubbles. Then , as I was moving the air pump under a mini shed where all the other pump supports are, I noticed it was very hot, even in shade. I took cover of to check, and didn't see anything out of the ordinary, other than heat. I left it unplugged an hour, checked to make sure I have full voltage in case it wasn't getting enough power, but that was fine. Plugged it back on and air was fine. Came out today and pump is no longer working. No sounds. Nothing. A disappointment to say the least. I thought I had the perfect budget bubbler. Once again. You get what you pay for. Since I didn't start it right off, I missed the return date. Burn.
