Guitars are important to me. I own tons of them, many of which are custom built...by me.I owned a Baretta back in 1984, just like this one, painted black. I saved a long time to buy it, and some four months later, it was stolen. Broke my heart. This one feels like that one, and I'm very pleased to add it to my collection. I've played it constantly since it arrived. The first thing I do with any guitar is make sure the neck will adjust as straight as possible. My Baretta had a slight relief at the seventh to ninth fret...less than .003. A slight turn of the truss rod eliminated said relief in less than a day. Dead straight. Its frets seem to be Dunlop 6150s, not as tall or wide as 6100s...say .110" wide, and .55" tall. I did not have to level them at all, and was only compelled to crown the first to the fourth. I did polish all the rest because only a cursory job of finishing them had been done at the factory.Being made of maple, I expected it to be rather heavy, and it is, though the body is so well balanced I don't really notice the heft of it. I have an ESP---not an LTD---Sunburst Tiger---that is made of maple, and weighs like a cinderblock in comparison and plas like a baseball bat. I added a Seymour Duncan Invader pickup to warm up the tone a little, and it worked. The Invader is a darker sounding pickup than the JB. This required a small amount of routing because the cavity is somewhat shallow. Shimming the neck pocket was an option, though a poor one at best.I have the action set at 4/64 on the bass side and 2/64 on the treble side at the 12th fret, with no buzzing in any position, which astonishes me. I will back it off some in the weeks to come, since I don't really care for action that low. The "Gibsonesque" 12" radius has a lot to do with how low I could get the strings.I really want another one!
