It is a basic unit. We bought it because it is one of the only ones without programming that still has a "warm" setting, which is critical to its use. **Q: cook turkey breast** A: Ok, coming from one who cooks.....a lot, exactly what are you looking for? Yes it will cook a turkey breast. Marinade your breast in a mix of around a gallon of chicken stock, 1/4 cup brown sugar and 2/3rd cup of salt for about 8-10 hours. After the marinade place the breast with about 2 cups of the marinade in the crock pot. Season with a little salt, pepper and I prefer McCormick's Italian Seasoning on the breast. Run on high for about 7 hours. Check internal temp center of breast one side or the other and it should be 160 degrees Fahrenheit. One of the other little things I do and not everybody does this but I inject melted butter mixed with onion powder into each breast portion. This works for me but not for others who are afraid of butter. This will help keep the breast tender and very tasty. The remaining mix of marinade and cooked turkey can help to make the gravy (you only use a few tablespoons of the liquid not the whole amount as the salt factor would overwhelm the gravy) I prefer to marinade before I go to bed then start the cooking before I go to work so when I get home everything is done turkey wise. **Q: How quickly does this unit heat up? Our old Hamilton Beach slow cooker takes nearly two hours to reach cooking temperature. Which is too long.** A: It seems to be at full temperature in 30-40 minutes. So much depends on how cold the ingredients in the pot are, and how full it is when I start. If I am cooking refrigerated meat I try to turn the pot on the minute I start food prep so it is getting warm as I add the ingredients. I think this pot is a good value for its price. My last pot did not seem to get hot enough, extending cooking time too far. I have found this one very satisfactory. **Q: Is the crock oven safe? I want to actually put the stoneware crock in regular oven and bake at 350 degrees. Then put in liner to keep warm.** A: I have never tried it, but the stoneware crock itself is very sturdy and I have put less sturdy casseroles in the oven at 350 degrees. It gets heavy use from me, once or twice a week EVERY week. It’s big enough for me to cook just about everything in it, from 6 quarts of chili to a good-sized roast. The clips on the side are used to secure the lid when you transport the slow cooker (not used when cooking), and have worked well the time or two that I’ve used them. For standard sloshing around in the car it has been fine with no leaks at all.I’ve found that following many recipes I find on the Internet, the suggested cook time works fine, with everything cooked through but not over-cooked. I’ve cooked all your standard slow cooker recipes in this, from beef stew to chili to cheese dip, and everything’s come out perfectly. As an added bonus, Hamilton Beach’s website has great recipes, especially their Slow Cooker Gridiron Chili, with which I won the annual chili cook-off at work. I routinely store leftovers in the fridge still in the crock with the included lid on top; the rubber gasket seals it just fine. Cleanup is super simple, too. Just rinse out the crock and the lid and stick them in the dishwasher.The only drawbacks I’ve seen over the years are it takes up a good bit of storage in my medium-sized apartment kitchen cabinet, mostly caused by the clips for the lid, which stick up and out to the sides.Overall I’m very pleased with this slow cooker, and if I was in the market for another one I’d buy the Hamilton Beach Stay or Go 6-Quart Slow Cooker again without hesitation.
