Take them out of the bags, pop them on the rails, and you're ready to rock. Dropping the legs is as simple as pushing on the locking levers. It comes with an instruction book that I did flip through. If you're getting this for an AR, the included AR mag well attachment is really cool and the myriad uses of it are covered in the book. I'll probably use it at some point. Pretty sure it won't replace a literal bench vise for torquing on AR barrels, though. Lots of people asked in the questions section. Everyone who says this thing is massive is correct. It's longer than your rifle and it's at perfect counter height for a pain-free back. 20 lbs is enough weight to keep it steady while working but not so much weight that I can't haul it up a flight of stairs or stow it in an equipment trailer. The clamp screws were a little stiff at first. A couple of drops of silicone oil loosened them up a bit and I imagine they'll get looser over time. Better to be too tight out of the box than too loose. I wish there were some sort of box or bag to transport it in but I'll figure something out. Bottom line: you get what you pay for in this case. I dont have a workbench or vice, so this would cover both aspects** A: Yes! Although only for long guns. Bolt action works super. Semi auto, works very well. I’d suggest you get the part that I believe is an option which is the part that can fit inside your magazine holder on the semi. Plus it’s great to clean any firearm. I was worried too about buying this. Very happy I did. Oh, and I did get the one with ‘legs’ - not certain if you’re considering that. Without the stand being at ‘waist’ high level - I don’t believe it will help you sight in a long firearm. I use mine at home for cleaning and to get a very close ‘center’ but if you can take it to a range, it’s a piece of cake to center. Just need to try your best to keep the rifle from moving post firing. It will take 3-5 tries to center at 200 yards. 100 yards is much simpler. At the range I centered at 50 yards first. Then texted with a 20 mag (556), then 100. I suggest you bring a white sharpie so you can make a ‘dot’ just in case your rifle slips of center, then you check to make sure you know where the scope dials had you centered. Hope I made sense and helped. Last point, it is SO MUCH easier if you have a helper at the range while centering- it’s hard to fire AND at the same time confirm the rifle doesn’t shift a bit as you go through the process. I’ve used on my semi’s: 556 and 308. And my 6.5 Creed that is bolt :-) **Q: Is this strong enough to install/remove barrel nut on AR?** A: I have only serviced my AR's on mine, have yet to remove/install a barrel nut but believe it wouldn't be a problem. I have a buddy who's a fully qualified AR Custom Builder, whom of course owns way higher and expensive equipment in his shop but when he saw my Tipton Standing Ultra Vice he was also of the opinion installing/removing barrel nuts should be feasible with this vice. You may already know this but the legs fold up and out of the way, exposing all four L corners with reinforced pieces for bench mounting so for more rigidity in a shop environment you also have that as an option if the long legs produce to much "wiggle" or movement.
