Very high gloss. I had a small nick on the edge of the ukulele but I put some clear coat finisher on it. Not a deal breaker for this price. I noticed as the strings broke in it started sounding better. It's not as great sounding as my Hawaiian K brands but I didn't have to spend over $1000. for this one. Clear sounding and resonates pretty good. For this price I would highly recommend this ukulele and would purchase again ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great looking and nicely playable/sounding ukulele selling for a song *by E***S on Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2020* I received the ukulele today. And I’m so impressed by its looks. Ukes made of solid koa are ridiculously very expensive. And it’s sort of unbelievable to get a uke made of high quality materials at this price point. But upon researching on the uke, I found out that the instrument is manufactured by Guangzhou Vines Musical Instruments Co., Ltd., a company established in 2014 with a production capacity of 200,000 ukuleles, taking bulk orders from different companies who sell ukuleles worldwide with their own brand. That’s why they can really bring the cost down!Now about the uke, it’s very pretty! The wood pattern, abalone rosette and binding make it look like an instrument costing at least a thousand. The sound is a little bit mellow, typical of a koa instrument, compared to that of a uke made of solid mahogany. It has good tone, resonance and sustain. The action is a bit high, which can be problematic for beginners but a good treat to seasoned players who want great volume without the buzzing that results when the action is too low. The strings took a little time to settle. But it is just natural for an instrument that leaves the factory untuned. On the negative side, the uke ships as a “Smiger” branded uke, not a “Naneki” that has great reviews in Amazon U.K. But if one looks at the picture being represented by the seller here in Amazon, the uke as well as the case have the “Smiger” brand. So, there is really no misrepresentation. Also, the instrument is not thoroughly cleaned of wood shavings inside its body. But it is not a deal breaker. One can easily vacuum the internal part of the body if one is so picky. There is also a trace of excess glue where the fretboard joins the body of the instrument. But even the Blackbird Farallon that costs more than a thousand dollars, which I really liked the sound but returned because of poor craftsmanship, suffered from more flaws.
