When I first experienced ear pain several weeks ago, my GP prescribed ear drops (ciprofloxacin and dexamethasone otic) which I thought helped at first, but ultimately my ear got worse. I ended up at a walk-in clinic after my ear pain became excruciating; my hearing was diminished and I felt a ton of pressure. The walk-in doctor prescribed oral antibiotics (amox clav 875 125 mg). I did the full seven days of antibiotic, and when that didn't help I knew I was not dealing with a bacterial ear infection. I think the main difference between fungal and bacterial is that this ear infection seemed to come and go which was very strange. I did not experience the itching that others are complaining about here. Mainly my ear was in serious pain and discomfort, and felt very full. When I viewed inside using an otoscope there was visible white pus/fungus. SO gross. This is the only ear infection I've ever experienced as an adult and it lasted several weeks before I figured out what was happening. I started these ear drops and I swear, my ear felt better the same day. I couldn't believe it. I still went to a specialist to make sure I was administering them correctly.
