I have several pieces with the precious October birthstone, opal.Lately I've been captivated by the other October birthstone, tourmaline, a semiprecious gem (except the rare teal blue color, which is usually considered precious) that like opal has a virtual rainbow of color variations depending on how water settles into the stone during its formation. "Watermelon" tourmaline is particularly fascinating.This pink tourmaline pendant matches a set of earrings (which are tiny, about half the size of the pendant), with the same lovely tulip setting. Online, the gem appears to be a slightly different color than in the earrings, but fortunately it matches them perfectly. The gems are highly polished and sparkle with every movement.The combination of rose gold, warm pink tourmaline, and the tulip setting is stunning. And the delicate, sparkly chain adjusts to three different lengths, which is fabulous. The downside of delicate is that handling and fastening this jewelry (both the earrings and necklace) takes some finesse because the settings and clasp are so very tiny!While I'm no gem or jewelry expert, and the listing doesn't specify the gem quality rating (e.g., AA or AAA), I'd guess it's high. I ended up returning it because the stone was not as vivid and looked more like morganite than pink tourmaline. The stone is small and between that and the ho-hum color I just didn't think it was worth the $$. Also, because of the small size & lotus setting it flips around on the thin chain provided and it often sits sideways or backward instead of forward when you put it on.
