My first impression was that it's actually a little bit smaller than I thought it was going to be, but that doesn't really matter as the box is very strong and the books are simply lovely to look at. The writing style of Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal reminds me of the novelisation of 'Willow' when the writer already has the story laid out before them and just tries too hard to be clever and artistic, but sort of fails because of it. I suppose it's quite difficult taking charge of characters and a story-line that isn't your own creation, so you can't dig your nails right into it.On the stories and writing alone, the books wouldn't be a lot to write home about and I wouldn't be giving a four-star review. However, I've grown up with these three films and series and I'm completely obsessed with Jim Henson (and Brian Froud) so, for me, the novelisation itself doesn't really matter. It's the note-pages, the pictures, the entire presentation of the books that win me over and I think other Henson fans will feel the same.
