## Description

The creator of Gingercake Patterns shows you how to share your passion for sewing with the world by starting a successful home business. Maybe you started sewing just for fun. But now you've developed the skills and vision to turn your creative outlet into something more. Making the leap from hobbyist to professional can be intimidating—but Virginia Lindsay is here to help you get off the sidelines and sew your way to a job you truly enjoy. Drawing on her own experience, Lindsay guides you through every aspect of starting your own craft business, from finding your personal sewing style to creating a product line, identifying customers, equipping your studio, pricing and selling your work, marketing yourself, designing your own patterns, and handling the business and legal side of sewing. And that's not all! Virginia also shares 16 projects (all customer-tested) that you can personalize to start sewing and selling right now.

Review: A Good Book to Get You Started - This is a good book to get you started and there’s quite a bit of general info crammed into it. It’s good for new sewing businesses or if you’re just starting to think about it. It’s a great way to check to see if you’ve covered everything you need to be doing. The info can be a little vague, but it’s more of an idea generator than a step-by-step. For a really in-depth guide you’ll want to find resources about how to sell your crafts online or how to price crafts and things you make to sell. It is worth noting that this book is from 2014 and well before world changing events. Some of the images are looking a little dated and the project price points are way off now. Expect to add $15-$20 or more to the suggestions. She has a second book in this series that covers other areas of selling and is also a great resource.
Review: Seems like a really helpful book - This is such a helpful book. Well, technically, I haven't sold any of the items from it yet, but I do have some for sale, and intend to sew more as time allows. Purchased this book over a year ago, and not only is it fun to read, but it has great photography, and seems very do-able. The author includes helpful tips to make the best use of supplies as well as other advice that seems to apply for anyone who wants to make money with sewing. I still just need to find more time to actually make some of the projects in here.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ What I needed to get started.
*by M***D on January 13, 2021*

How do I sell locally and on line is the question, SEWING TO SELL by Virginia Lindsay has some of the answers. It is “The beginners guide to starting a craft business”, a book I purchased in 2019, glanced at in 2020 and am now taking seriously. To date, I have given away more crafts than I have sold mainly because I make money in other ways. But making stuff cost and I do not have a credit card or an unlimited supply of money. I have been asked on more than one occasion by people willing to pay: Do you have a website? My answer has always been no. So what does this book have to offer? SEWING TO SELL talks mostly about what to make and how to make it. In the appendix is the administrative stuff like taxes and setting up a business but it is just an overview. This book simply gives the reader the encouragement to know that she can make money making things like grocery totes. The “but” is: you have to have an inventory. This book was exactly what I needed, an overview of selling what I make. I did not want a big 300+ page manual of setting up a business from beginning to the first customer- that would be overwhelming. Somethings you can just google. Written by Marsh L F Randolph This book is part of my personal reading library. The review is my honest unsolicited opinion.
