I only use it with the lid that holds the straws. I drink a lot of tea and have not yet experienced any staining or discoloration of the bottle or straw. The unit is leak proof with the lid securely fastened. I tend to throw it in the passenger seat during my daily commute and have not had any spills. This water bottle comes with two hard plastic straws and a separate attachment for the straw to use a thermos. I would make it through the day with something to drink at lunch and dinner and that was it. Now, I enjoy drinking water and drink at least two of these (64 ounces) just at work! I use the normal wide mouthed lid, which makes it a lot easier to drink compared to my old Contigo bottle. The steel bottle has a great heft and feel, and it keeps water nice and chilled, which keeps me coming back to drink it.
