A functional feeder for smaller birds, but of questionable durability. . .

I wanted to get a couple new bird feeders for putting sunflower chips in that would keep the seeds dry. Wet sunflower hearts and their pieces go bad quickly when they get wet. I also wanted my new feeders to support mainly smaller birds (pine siskins, red polls, chickadees and nuthatches) since we have an abundance of blue jays which often horde and hide food. This not-so-wonderful behavior of blue jays make it difficult for smaller birds in my area to feed. After some looking, I found this. . .I was impressed by the ratings and how the seed is supposedly enclosed so to keep it dry in all seasons. . .and that it was metal--mostly. One thing I don't care for are feeders that are comprised of mostly plastic, especially cheap plastic. A little plastic is fine, but a lot, no. Plastic just does not weather the elements for very long. This feeder also appeared to have smaller perches so as to make it difficult for larger pesky birds such as blue jays from stealing all the food. It all looked good, so I ordered two of them. The bird feeders were packed well. . .very well. They were also easy to remove from their packaging, which definitely is a plus. I'm sure some of you know what it is like having to struggle with items that are a royal pain in the butt to remove from their manufacturer's box because of thick tie straps, wads of tape, glue or whatever. The packaging truly was "frustration free."Immediately after pulling out the first feeder, though, I noticed how light it felt. "Hmm. . ." I thought, ". . .these can't be of the highest quality." Upon further inspection. . .they weren't. The metal is quite thin. . .and the plastic lining that keeps the seed inside seems VERY brittle. I'm sure if you were to drop these from three feet--perhaps even just two-- in height, that plastic lining would surely fracture. If you have raccoon issues (they love to knock feeders down to the ground), or have very strong winds and don't have the best hangers to secure them, you might want to skip this feeder.I was also a little disappointed with the top filling port, the part which you open by pushing that small black button near the top. It felt and looked like plastic, but upon closer inspection--I really had to look closely--it was metal, a very flimsy and thin metal, even thinner than the metal on the sides (could be very thin aluminum since a magnet won't stick to it; a magnet sticks to the rest of the feeder, though). In addition, the inside has a small spring that flips the cover open upon pushing the black button, and this wire spring was very flimsy as well. Even though the top cover is extremely light, by the looks of the wire they used for that spring, I can't see it enduring for very long. Of course, if the wire spring breaks, a person can still open the feeder; one will just have to open the top manually. I don't know why the manufacturer chose to use such a flimsy top cover and spring, for it only lessens the already questionable durability of the product. Surprisingly, though, the perches are fairly strong, probably the sturdiest part of the whole feeder. I also wish the hanging wire wasn't as long as it is, for the longer it is, the more the feeder will sway in the wind. Of course, this is more of a minor issue.I've been using these feeders for about six weeks now. . .and, I have to admit, they do work. The smaller birds flock to them, and significantly. In fact, the birds come to these feeders so much that I need to fill them every two days. The perches are just right for smaller birds, the feeding ports are easy to access and, most importantly, it keeps the seeds dry--for most part. With blowing snow and/or rain, some of the seed in the feeding ports will get a little wet, but this is true for most feeders. And as for the top filling port, it does allow for easy filling, no doubt there. I just wish it would have been a little sturdier. In all, this is a very nice design, but I do wish the materials were of higher quality. It's hard to say how long these two feeders will last, but I hope for at least a couple years. The design I give five stars, but the quality I give three. So, overall, I rate this as a four star product.

The feeder you want, read the review

*by A***D on Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2020*

Package arrived in new condition. Fits several large cups of seed, usually lasts me 3-7 days, depending on the quality of seed used. The hanging cable is flexible and has not been an issue with several pounds of seed inside of it. There is a easy press button located at the top, which releases a spring to easily pop the top open with no work. The brass color looks fantastic, several compliments. No protection for squirrels if they get to it. 4 pedestals for birds to hang on. Ideal for small birds, but I’ve seen 9” woodpeckers on it. And it doesn’t cause seed to pour out. A squirrel knocked it down a flight of steps when it was empty and tore at the button, so the tin was bent, but easily bent back into shape. Highly encourage this product.

Nice enough feeder, made into a hassle due to cheap hang strap

*by J***. on Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2019*

Like another reviewer, mine hung nicely for exactly a week before falling to the ground. The hanging cable had come away. True, a squirrel was trying to get a snack at the time but that's not exactly uncommon with bird feeders. The feeder hangs from a short length of plastic-enclosed wire cable which is plenty strong. The ends of the cable are fed through small holes on either side of the feeder body, which is fine too. Then small metal sleeves are placed over each end of the cable and crimped onto the ends of the cable. The sleeves are just a little too big to let the cable sneak back out through the holes, so the thought was clearly that they would anchor the cable in place. That's perfect logic as long as one of those retaining sleeves doesn't come away from the end of the cable it's crimped onto. But the crimp is not strong enough, or its 'bite" onto the cable isn't long enough. So the cable pops out of a sleeve (either one) and the feeder falls to the ground. Since I'm not the first to report the issue, I'm going to guess this feeder was tested without the weight of a full load of seed plus at least one squirrel. I'm gonna go ahead and say that means it wasn't tested at all, but that's just me.On the plus side: the feeder survived a roughly five foot drop with zero damage and very little feed spillage, so it's not fragile. Scared the poop out of the squirrel who rode it to the ground too, always a plus, but I'm betting he'll be back.I expect to be able to browse through a hardware store and find some parts to band-aid this thing up to code, as it were. If you're thinking about it, know that it's a very nice feeder with a hang strap that is going to fail sooner or later. Hopefully the seller will fix this tiny (but still deal-breaking) flaw soon.
