**Q: What's the distance between top of first shelf and bottom of second shelf?**
A: 16"

**Q: is this rated for outdoor use?**
A: No. Since it has an electric motor, you shouldn't use it outdoors.

**Q: What is the weight capacity of each shelf and the total unit?**
A: Each shelf 100 lbs I believe but 165 lbs total for unit.

**Q: Shelf - could it be less made than 42" wide & does the shift detach easily from the bar?**
A: Mine is 46.5" wide and you can't make it any smaller. These are welded steel shelves.   You can detach the shelf from the bar if needed.  I never do, so can't say if it is an easy task.

1st off, I have to say I only paid 60 dollars for the shelf. The shelf is very sturdy and worth every penny. I have been looking to add a shelf over my deep freezer in my garage. This shelf fits perfect and I don't need a ladder to reach anything.
