I'd gotten used to living with anemic volume levels as well, in that normal volumes were accompanied by audible hiss. Taking a chance, in that some reviews of the HS5 Yamaha speakers also mention audible hiss, I was elated to hear NO hiss from either speaker, and with keyboard and speaker volumes all set at half scale, fantastically loud, yet distortion-free replication of the concert grand piano voice for which Yamaha keyboards are famous. I still own and use a Yamaha NS Series R-700 tuner amp from the '70's, and as a Yamaha (principally) motorcycle mechanic in the mid-60's and mid-70's I learned early-on that they were tops in design and build quality throughout the industry, at least until the 1972 TX750's release was driven by marketing and broke the unbreakable rule of never using the public as a guinea pig. I'll revise this review if time introduces something new, but for now the audiophile in me is FULLY satisfied with these diminutive dynamos.
