Read the instructions on the amazon reviews first its explained better, and in larger print.The ear temp. reading is not accurate i tried 4 times in both ears and got a different reading every time with up to one degree fluctuations. i even allowed 10 seconds in between testing inside my ear for the plastic nozzle to cool in case it kept any heat at all.The forehead readings are accurate i gave them 4 tests as well. MY ADVICE just use the FOREHEAD reading its fine and accurate and easier. LEAVE THE CAP ON GENTLY PLACE ON THE LEFT OF YOUR OWN FOREHEAD PRESS THE TOP BUTTON AND HOLD IN SWIPE IT ACROSS TO THE RIGHT SIDE TAKING ABOUT 2 TO 3 SECONDS SECONDS AND LET GO. very easy. Try it on yourself first then you will see how easy it is. THE EAR TEST. TAKE THE CAP OFF PLACE GENTLY INSIDE DO NOT PUSH IT RIGHT IN. THEN PRESS AND LET GO THEN TAKE IT OUT AND READ. this is also very simple but the readings always fluctuate which is not reliable especially when the fluctuations are so different every time.( the forehead test is far easier anyway). Ideally i wanted the type they use in the hospitals which are all no contact devices and are obviously more expensive but this is fine now i know how to use it. And anyway its only for my husband so the the price is near enough. Popped the batteries in & Hey Presto, we were up & running.. It is sleek, it is lightweight & it is accurate.. We have an expensive 'in-ear' Digital Thermometer too, so compared readings at first use & they were identical. My 3yo Grandson refuses the 'in-ear' one, so this is perfect & no complaints at all from him. It can be used for multiple surface/liquid temperatures, which makes it much more versatile than an 'in-ear'.. We use it on the ground outside to test before my Granddaughter takes her Bearded Dragon out on her lead.
