The systems have performed well using first Dantz, now EMC2 Retrospect as the backup utility. Generally, I have been able to store less than the advertised capacity of the tapes (~70 Gb on VXA-2 and ~130 Gb on VXA-3). The backup speed varies from a ~100 Mb/min to 700 Mb/minute on a modern PC with an Adaptec SCSI controller. The capacity and backup performance are strongly dependent on the nature of the material to be backed up. Many small files that do not compress well take longer to backup than large compressible files. Review: The only game in town, but a good one - The VXA series of tape drives is one of the few cost-effective options for backing up systems with very large disk drives. It's not perfect, but it does the trick, particularly when using a system such as Dantz Retrospect which supports incremental backups to tape for both PC and Mac.
