For making bowls, I measure the weight change of the bowl over time (it gets lighter as it loses water), but for some of my furniture projects, it's just not possible to use that method--it's not easy to balance a 10' board on a scale!. So, I picked up this moisture meter. It comes with a little carrying/storage case, a 9v battery, and is good to use as soon as you open the package. The readout digits are easy to read-- and while the manual isn't the best English translation, it's simple to use. Turn it on, poke it into your wood, check out the reading. It also has a second button to "Hold" the reading (I guess if you need to write it down or something), but that's it. Super straight forward.It's a good size to hold, has four pins, and the readings seem to be responsive and consistent. I do not know how accurate the readings are (I have no way to calibrate it, and for about $20 I have different expectations than if it was $100), but I have used it to monitor the change in moisture content of my wood over time. I check the readings every few days, and once they stop changing, I know my wood has stabilized/acclimated and should be good to go.This is a great tool to add to your arsenal without a big investment-- there's no reason not to have one on hand with a price this low. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great addition to toolkit... *by W***U on Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2020* The meter came with a fresh 9V battery, in a nice canvas zipper case with carrying loop, boxed. The needle probe cover is designed to be hard to remove for children or the uninitiated. The secret is to place a thumb in the recess on the case and use the thumbnail to flick the raised UP button up and away from the case. The meter is easy to use, and has a reading "hold" feature which comes in handy when you are probing with outstretched arm in inconvenient places or insufficient lighting. The readings are very stable and repeatable. The manual states that it is calibrated foronly a single type of wood but doesn't say which, but for the price I did not expect it to be a specialist quality unit with multiple calibrations built-in. What is important is being able to get a stable repeatable reading over and over again at multiple times with the same material, and this meter does satisfy that requirement. In one of my initial uses I was able to determine that a darkened (on the inside) section of siding was not really wet as feared, but really old preservative that was splashed on by a prior owner of the building. The peace of mind gained was well worth the purchase price. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Easy to use and sturdy *by R***R on Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2019* First off - its always nice to get things in reuseable cases. Makes it easy to put this away and find it again. Its also a good size - large enough to hold comfortably in the hand, small enough to stuff in a pocket when you don't need it.Comes with a 9 volt battery which you have to attach yourself, but the flexible connector is MUCH easier to use than some of the stubborn connectors that everyone's fought with before. Nice attention to detail there. The case is sturdy, doesn't creak or crack if you twist it or squeeze hard, definitely giving confidence that this isn't going to break anytime soon, even if its dropped in the woods.Controls are as simple as it gets. Hit the power button, and jab the four pins into the endgrain of the wood you want to measure. If you can't see the screen, just hit the H button to hold the measurement until pressed again, so you can see it.Only downfall is that this doesn't have different settings for different types of wood, so if you're looking to woodwork with a variety of different species, this might not be for you. If you wanna check pine or firewood, or just make sure you're in the ballpark, this will work great.
