A particular type of whetstone that uses water is a Japanese water stone, which uses water as a lubricant. **Q: I heard you use any kind of cooking oil instead on your wet stones. is it true? I've done it a few times because vegi or canola is way cheaper** A: Proper honing oil should be thinner (i.e. less viscous) than the standard Walmart/drug store mineral oil. However, if you insist on buying standard mineral oil, then thin it 50/50 with mineral spirits to make it the proper viscosity.
