The decision lies in how fine or fast of a cut you want to make; one is a trade off to the other, will you be using it primarily for crosscut or rips. The 40 tooth will cut faster but the 50 will cut cleaner. In hardwood the 40 will not burn lighter woods like maple but will give you a courser cut. If you are looking for a general purpose blade where you will be cutting a variety of woods across and with the grain the 40 is an excellent choice.
