However this little thing is much louder than the one we were replacing. Upside it uses a standard 9v battery so no weird battery combos. We used this on an metal emergency exit in a retail space that was about 120' from the cash registers. Now everyone can hear if someone tries to slip out that door into the parking lot. It has an internal reed/magnet setup that works like a lego block and can be moved around the inside of the unit to wherever the magnet contact is on the door. My only suggestion - the screws are pretty much for a wood door setup so save a headache and grad some self-tapping metal screws if using on a metal door and/or door jamb. Happy so far but it's only been installed a few days. I would only update this if it dies in the first year based on the price alone. When properly mounted and key switch is turned on, the opening of the door will pull the unit away from the magnet that then releases the internal read switch causing the siren to alert. MOUNTINGH: Close the door then mount the magnet on the inside door frame at the opposite side of the hinges (opening). Depending on the conditions, locate the magnet either at the top or side of the door frame near the door's surface but do allow a slight distance from the actual door surface so that it doesn't stop the door from closing. Once it is mounted you will mount the main unit onto the actual door putting the read switch side of the unit so it is very close and lined-up evenly with the top of the magnet's surface. You will need to disassemble the unit so as to mount the unit to the door as well as to insert or change the battery. There are two types of keys for this unit, the metal type key has a fork end on it that fits into the screw head that holds unit together. The gold keys (two) are used to turn on or shut off the unit. You will need to have this gold key available to turn-off the unit or to turn on the unit. **Q: Alarm goes off even when key is off. READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY! Before you try to set the DIP switches inside the alarm, make sure you understand the settings. Never discard those instructions! Many settings available depending on what you want. DO NOT use a graphite for moving the DIP switches. You risk breaking inside the switch. They are not hard to move up or down.
