## Description

New HD (High-Definition) Coating on the new Pentax 55-300 f4-5.8 WR (weather resistant) lens.

Review: Nice sharp lens with decent brightness for wildlife and sports photography - A zoom lens is by nature a bit of a compromise, but the compromises this one makes fit a lot of people's needs well. It's not excessively large and heavy and thus good for shooting wildlife and sports where a lens with a larger aperture would have needed a larger/heavier front element to gather that extra light, thus making the whole affair unwieldy when you're trying to swiftly swivel the camera to keep up with the action. But it'll still open plenty wide even at 300mm to capture a seagull in mid-flight in sharp focus with the sea nicely out of focus behind him. The only real warning I have is that this is *not* a macro lens. If you think you're going to get an ultra-tight view of a bee that is on a flower three feet away from you, think again. It won't focus that close. It's a lens for shooting wildlife and sports at greater than arms length distances, generally in full daylight, and for that purpose it shoots amazingly distortion-free and sharp at both the near and far ends of its zoom range where most zoom lenses really only work well in the middle of their zoom range. It is also relatively fast to focus despite the screw drive, which is always helpful when attempting to catch a flock of pelicans in mid-flight. Only real downside is the cost of the WR model versus the non-WR model of this lens. Surely seals can't be that expensive? Still, if you have a Pentax body this is the best zoom of its type (i.e. relatively compact 50-300mm class zooms for photographing wildlife and sports), handily beating the third-party offerings in quality and, of course, weather resistance (the WR part of the model number).
Review: A worthy lens to add to your kit or collection - I purchased this zoom lens for my Pentax K-70. This lens is very well built. It's a bit heavy but not too heavy. The auto-focusing is quite loud and not the fastest (my Sony G series zoom/prime lenses are much faster at focusing, for example) but it works fine. Furthermore, this lens takes some getting used to in terms of using it correctly. When the lens is zoomed in to 200-300mm, it is very hard to get a sharp image without a tripod, so definitely have one handy if you plan on capturing subjects far away. The lens hood is very nice and I like how it clips onto the perimeter of the len's body. Overall, I recommend this lens as a good starter lens for your Pentax camera.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: is the lens sharp at full distance when used for sporting events requiring a fast shutter speed?**
A: I also have a Sigma 50-500mm (Bigma) that is highly rated, I find this lens to compare favorably and being much smaller much easier to get steady & sharp hand-hel results at 300mm. Took photos at a band concert a week ago (indoors) and was impressed that I could read the type on name tags music stand from a distance. Basically a very sharp lens for the money. I highly recommend.

**Q: How does the IQ of this lens compare with the Sigma 70-300mm?**
A: The biggest difference is that this lens is weather sealed, while the Sigma 70-300mm is not. Its range also meshes well with the stock 18-55mm kit lens. Regarding IQ, the only head to head test I found seemed to indicate IQ was similar except at the far end (270-300mm) where the Pentax had slightly better IQ. But the two lenses are close enough that if I hadn't valued the weather sealing I probably would have gotten the Sigma at half the price -- the reality is that neither is a professional grade lens and neither will give you professional-grade IQ at 300mm.

**Q: Is this the weather resistant version as the "WR" in the name suggests?**
A: I have three new Pentax lenses (18-135mm, 55-300mm, 100mm macro). They are all WR lenses. I don't have any newer non-WR lenses to compare, but the WR versions have a visible orange colored "O-Ring" in the face of the mount. There are no other obvious differences indicating weather resistance. My older Pentax lenses do not have the O-Ring. I bought these lenses with a new K5-II, and I'm very pleased with the combinations. (Far superior to my older K100D!) I hope this helps.

**Q: will it work on the k500**
A: will it work on the k3 2?

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ High optical quality & it is WR!
*by P***R on September 6, 2014*

I have heard a lot of good things about this lens but don't really need this lens since I have Sigma 70-200 f/2.8, Sigma 100-300 f/4, Pentax 50-135 f/2.8. I bought it because I need WR even though the Pentax 50-135 is WR but the range is a little on the short side. I was not expecting much optically. It shares the same optical formula as the DA-L version which is priced very competitive. However, I am extremely happy with image quality. I have little concerns using it in place of the other three, However, I must emphasize that the aperture is definitely on the slow side. Subject background isolation is limited. Nov 12 2014 update: I have used it a couple times since the original review but there is no change in opinion. I want to update because I found out that it works really well with an inexpensive 1.4X tele-converter (Vivitar Series 1 1.4X TC). The combination in conjunction with a K-5 IIs had no problem focusing under fairly dim condition at all focal lengths. IQ is more than acceptable even wide open, at least in the center. With this result, I decided that I will only bring this zoom for an upcoming trip to cover the tele part of the focal length instead of the three faster zooms mentioned above.
