It can save you a lot of money when used properly. I did a lot of reading before I purchased this adapter. As I find out after refilling many one pound bottles, some of what I read was very helpful and some was outright dangerous. Yes, you can overfill a one pound bottle. Over filling is dangerous and it can be done easily. One review suggests putting the empty bottles in the freezer to chill them down. Another review suggests after filling the bottles put them back in the freezer again in order to get more propane in them. There were some other reviews that questioned the possibility of overfilling the bottles by using the twice in the freezer method. One review disclaimed the possibility of overfilling a bottle because he felt there would always be a gas bubble left in the bottle to allow for the expansion of the liquid thus preventing over pressurization of the bottle. Well, please listen up and read on. You can overfill the bottles! I know because I did it. This is why I am writing this longer than normal review. One might ask, "How did you know you were over filling the bottles"? The answer is simple. The sides of the bottles I had been filling were bulging. Say what? Yes, bulging. The reviews that I described all forgot something very important. Yes, you want to keep the bottle you are filling cooler than the supply bottle. Yes, there is a usually gas bubble that should allow for the expansion of the liquid. But because propane can be condensed there has to be a rather large bubble in the bottle or it will disappear and cause the pressure in the bottle to go sky high when filled and then warmed, in a hot shed or just brought into a warm area. The real danger here is the bottle can burst. The more times a bottle is overfilled, the higher the chance of a rupture. I have to guess if one continues to overfill the same bottles over and over a burst is a guarantee. Need I describe all the terrible things that can happen in the event of a bottle burst or rupture? Most likely not, use your imagination. Still reading? Not bored? My purpose with this review is not to scare people to the point where they won't use this wonderful and well made product. My purpose is to let people know it is dangerous if done wrong. However, if done correctly it can be safe and can save one a lot of money. The missing link with the reviews I have read is a scale to measure the weight of the bottle. I have weighed a ton of 1 pound bottles. 1 pound 14 ounces seems to be the magic number. You can even purchase the scale right here on Amazon. I use the Etekcity 13 pound maximum weight scale. Mine was just a bit under $15.00 again, here on Amazon. Works great! If you can't find a even surface to put it on in order to use it, it won't be accurate. I use a thick piece of plexiglass. It takes a bit of trial and error but a couple of fills and you will get good at it. Better to be a little short on weight than over.Here's what I do. Use this information at your own risk. I make no claims of filling bottles in complete safety. Here we go....1. Filling bottles should be done outside only. Give yourself as many directions of egress as possible.2. This should be performed with Safety Goggles, work gloves along with a long sleeve shirt or jacket. I'm sure you can add to the list of safety equipment needed.3. Install the adapter on the tank you will be filling from. Remember, the adapter has left hand threads. You want this tank to be about 20 deg. F higher in temperature than the bottles you are filling. The easiest thing to do is cool the bottles you will be filling.4. Position the tank you are filling from upside down on the edge of a stable table. Be careful!5. Screw the bottle you are filling into the adapter.6. Crack the valve open on the tank you are filling from just enough to hear the liquid flowing and no farther.7. When you hear the flow slowing down close the tank valve. Weigh the bottle. 1 pound 14 ounces is the target. If not enough weight, screw the bottle back into the adapter and proceed back to step #6. The object is not to overfill the bottle. Sneak up on the final filled weight. With some practice you will be able to get real close on the first shot. If you should by chance overfill, screw a torch tip on the bottle and burn off the excess weight. Do this far away from the filling operation.8. Once all your bottles are filled, remove the adapter from the tank and store in a clean plastic baggie. Install a cover over the tank fitting in order to keep dirt out.9. Congratulations! You have succeeded in filling a one pound bottle to a safe factory filled weight.Please understand, there is no substitute for good old fashioned common sense. Although there is science involved in this, it's not rocket science. If you feel uncomfortable with what you have just read don't purchase this product and don't fill propane bottles.If you are comfortable with what you have just read, then by all means, buy this well made product and use it with confidence.Happy Filling! ### ⭐⭐⭐ 3.0 out of 5 stars Directions are not really sufficient. *by J***S on Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2013* When I followed the instructions, I didn't get any liquefied propane into the small cans. In order to do that, I had to invert the bulk (20#) tank before turning the valve on. I'd include a picture if I could, but the bulk tank needs to be as close as practical to upside down and the small can needs to be aimed downward so the liquefied propane, not the gas, flows into the can. DO NOT TOUCH THE BRASS FITTING WITH BARE SKIN IMMEDIATELY AFTER USING! IT IS VERY COLD! Once I figured all of this stuff out, the product worked great. IT IS ILLEGAL TO TRANSPORT A REFILLED DISPOSABLE CAN. But I decided to give it a try. When I received it, I tried it out going against the suggestions about freezing the bottles. The propane leaked and did not fill the bottle at all. I thought "Son of a crap, it's not going to work." But after putting the bottles in the freezer for a couple of hours and trying it again, it worked better than expected. I had the source tank upside down and it caused the neck of the disposable to bend a little because of the fast temperature change and the weight of the propane going into the bottle pulling it down. (That's my guess why) So next time I will try laying the source tank on its side.
