It's much more effective at blocking flares than a lens hood, and about the same price. If you drop your camera lens first, this will hopefully take the brunt of the damage (no, I haven't tested that!).The rod clamp hardware works fine. The flags stay out of the shot of my 18mm lens (super35 sensor). The flags have only very limited adjustability; they like to snap to specific positions. On the plus side, that means they stay put pretty well. The flags can't fold forward to close. You can't use expensive rectangular filters. You can still use circular filters attached to your lens, of course.The diameter of the opening is 85mm. I have a 77mm to 82mm step-up ring from K&F that has an outer diameter of 84.5mm, so it fits perfectly inside like it was made for it. Upon receiving it and trying to mount the top flap, the clips broke rendering the flap useless. I contacted the seller to replace the defective part and they have already sent it out. The defective flap I received is the only reason this doesn't get 5 stars.Now, I'd like to address the *when you know WHY you're buying it* part of my review title. I'd like to start by saying that this product is NOT a matte box. This is a sun shade. Matte boxes feature articulating flags to allow near complete control over stray light enter your lens as well as one or more filter trays for adding ND or color filters in front of your lens. This is beneficial because you don't need to spend the time/money to apply filters to every lens; you need only add filters to the matte box trays. True matte boxes cost much more than this product and are made of heavy, high quality materials to withstand use by working professionals and serious amateur filmmakers.I own a professional matte box. It is heavy, cumbersome, awkward, and way too big for my setup. I use the very compact Panasonic GH2 for my video work. The camera and lenses are small and lightweight; perfect for my run n' gun and discreet style of shooting. The professional matte box on the front of my rails triples the overall weight of the rig! Plus the sheer size of the matte box dwarfs the camera and lens making for a very strange looking setup.The Fotga matte box (sun shade) on the other hand is small and incredibly lightweight. It provides all the light control I need in a much smaller and less expensive package. I'm currently devising a way to attach my Cokin P filter tray to the back of the sun shade so I can have the same filter capabilities of my professional matte box. The build quality is obviously lower on the Fotga when compared to a professional option. The Fotga is mainly plastic with only the mounting bracket being made of metal. To me this is no big deal because the plastic is plenty strong to hold its own weight.There is one benefit to this matte box that is a little more abstract than the functional benefits. The benefit is how people perceive you with this matte box attached to your rig. In this bold new age of DSLR video, people are not yet accustomed to seeing a still camera taking video. There have been so many times at different events I've shot that people have assumed I'm shooting photos (despite the shoulder rig) and simply pose for a photo rather than interact with the video camera. Adding this simple matte box will help people realize that you are shooting video and not photos which can lead to better footage.I paid right around $16 for this and could not be happier.
