Review: Celestron Outland X 10x42 Binoculars - I almost didn't purchase this product because of the way the ocular adjustment was described in the review by "Hard Core Camper". However, knowing that Celestron has the reputation of producing what are normally high quality optics, I couldn't believe that adjusting the right eyecup could potentially force a person to have one eyecup as much as a 1/2 inch out of alignment with the other eyecup. Therefore, I took a chance and ordered the Outland X binoculars and I'm glad I did. For this price, I would defy anyone to find a better pair of binoculars on the market. For their size, they are relatively light weight and they produce crystal clear images. They come with protective coverings for the eyecups as well as the lenses and they are easy to focus. I live in FL where you frequently go from indoor air conditioning to outdoor locations that are hot and muggy and I have not experienced any noticeable fogging of the lenses. I think where "Hard Core Camper" went wrong was in the misunderstanding that when the principal focus wheel is adjusted, it should be done so in a manner that gives the left eye the best possible focus. Then, if the right eye is not in focus, yes, you must adjust that by turning the right eyepiece. While that can make the right eyepiece extend as much as about a 1/2 inch closer to your eye, depending upon upon how much turning it takes to give the right eye the the best focus, you can then turn the left eyepiece out to match the distance of the right eyecup. Turning the left eyepiece out WILL NOT change the focus of the left eye. It is simply an accommodation so that both eyecups are made equidistant from the binocular body. The bottom line is, you DO NOT have to be left with eyepieces that are misaligned. Overall, I think you will be very satisfied with these binoculars.

**Q: How much is the zoom difference between 10x42 and 12x50?**
A: In a binocular power rating (e.g. 10x42) the first number is magnification. The second number is the diameter of the objective lens (large lenses at the opposite end from the eyepiece lenses), in this case 42 millimeters. Hence, 10x42. The magnification power of a 12x50 is 12 times magnification (12 times larger than normal unaided vision). So the "zoom difference" would be an increase of 20% in the magnification from a 10x42 to a 12x50.The objective lens diameter determines light gathering capability and the size of the field of view. A higher magnification is not necessarily a good thing, as it is more difficult to maintain a stationary image, the light gathering capability is often impaired, and the field of view is reduced. For most uses, a binocular of 7 or 8 power is about right. 10 power is good for people with steady hands, and 12 power often requires a tripod to hold a stable image.

**Q: We are going whale watching, which would be better 8 X 42 or 10 X 42?**
A: I own Celestron 18-40X80MM for the sky view and Canon 12X36 IS III for wild nature. Based on the experience and knowledge I have, using those 2 binoculars, I can tell you that higher a binoculars’ viewing power is, more details but less content on the view you will see, whereas weaker/lower viewing power a binoculars is, less details but more content you will see. Also higher viewing power helps you see things far away whereas lower viewing power helps you see things less far away.

The above said is not all that should be taken into consideration. The other factor is stability that must be well considered because the view through the binoculars does shake/wobbles. With higher viewing power ones, the view is more unstable when held by hands, whereas, with lower/weaker viewing power ones, the view is more stable when held by hands. That’s why my Celestron 18-40X80MM is useless when held by hands because the view shakes and it makes my eyes very uncomfortable. Imagine you hold a level tool in your hands. Your hands shake and you can’t keep it still. You won’t be able to keep your hands steady holding a high-powered viewing binoculars in hands. That’s why I bought a tripod.

Taking these two binoculars into comparison, I’d go with 8 simply because the view would be more stable. Staying on a boat in the water, the stability wouldn’t be ideal.

**Q: they are good to take them to a music concert?**
A: Would be yes. They aren't that heavy.

**Q: Recommended by manufacturer for stargazing binoculars, the Skymaster ED pro 7x50. Is this a good size to put in my luggage to travel?**
A: The Skymaster Pro ED 7x50 is not an outsized instrument and should travel well. The dimensions are 180mm x 198mm x 64mm (7.1" x 7.8" x 2.5") and the binoculars have a nylon carrying case.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Eyepiece Fell Off After 7 Months

I really like these binoculars. They worked well for me, watching birds from my yard. They eye relief cups are easy to adjust. They're not too heavy either. The only problem I had was after 7 months, one of the eyepieces came lose and fell off. At first, I noticed the image in the two barrels were not aligned. Then, I noticed the left eyepiece was loose. Finally, it came off. Apparently, the action of removing the rubber dust covers put some strain on the eyepiece and the rubber armor that actually holds the eyepiece in place. Eventually, the rubber armor ripped (see image with pencil) and the eyepiece came free. I definitely didn't mistreat them. I've taken good care of these binoculars. The rubber surround holding the eyepieces just isn't sturdy enough. So, I emailed for an RMA because it has a manufacturer lifetime limited warranty. The RMA request was quick and easy. Initially, I called support. But, because the wait time was going to be too long, I decided to email them instead. In the email I explained the issue and included the same pictures. The next day they gave me an RMA number and made it clear I need to include a check or money order to cover processing (just over 14). Also, all original parts need to be included. It sounds like they're going to send me a new kit. I shipped the binoculars at my cost today. I might update this review if anything interesting happens. So far, the cost to ship the binoculars plus the service cost is about 40% of my total original order. I guess that's a good deal. Better than buying another pair. Although, I'm not keen on the service cost, I understand and accept it. The build of the binoculars could've prevented the additional cost to me. Support was very responsive, though. In the end, I think I'll be happy with the replacement.
