The pole itself is hollow metal, so it will not crack, bend or break. I have ordered a new one and realize now how to make this shovel sturdy and a truly great shovel for lighter loads (up to 2 or 3"). Here is the method: First put a mark, a straight line on the pole right in line with where the screw is inserted into the shovel (black lower part). In other words, mark the screw's location exactly on the pole. Then carefully remove the screw and remove the pole from the shovel. Fill the hole with Gorilla Glue or some other strong glue and reinsert the pole, making certain that the holes in the shovel and pole line up. Re-install the screw but do not over-tighten. Next go to a hardware or auto parts store and buy a small hose clamp, about 1.5 to 2 inch. Clamp the neck of the shovel at the top (above or over the screw) good and tight. Finally, remove the handle screw after marking the pole (as before with the shovel part), and remove the pole from the handle. Put some glue into the handle hole, re-insert the pole and the screw. Allow a good 24 hours for the glue applications to cure before using the shovel. This is a well designed product. It is light, especially good for a pivoting, sweeping push-shovel motion when shoveling. It is 49" tall (total height from ground to top edge of handle) and 18" wide--an excellent size for quick low stress work. If the Bully Company would make a shovel with these dimensions, I'd buy it. But this Ames product, with the modifications described is just as durable and will last until the edge wears out (which, after ten+ years of service, is normal). I live in the Chicago area and we get our share of old man winter's worst. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great snow shovel! *by T***E on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 17, 2015* I broke my snow shovel a few years ago, and was never proactive enough to think to get one before the bad weather sets in. I live on the southeast coast of Virginia, so we do not get a lot of snow. But when we do get it, we get 6 or 8 inches at a time. I got my shovel early this year and it just sat in the garage until today. We got about 6 inches last night with sleet on top, so I put this to good use today. The shape is excellent. I shoveled my front steps and sidewalk and a path out to the street (about 50 feet) in no time, then went over and helped my elderly neighbor with hers. She has the more traditional flat snow shovel, and she's decided that she is going to get one like mine now that she saw how well it works. If you live in an area that gets frequent snows, I would recommend a larger, metal version of this same type, but this one works great if you don't have to do too much shoveling. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A decent shovel, seems strong and fairly comfortable to use. *by H***D on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 23, 2015* The shovel seems fine, though I personally haven't used it much. It does scoop snow and make it a lot easier to move more snow in each scoop. The design allows me to handle heavy loads of snow from a seated position. This is no small feat; I use a wheelchair, and most shovels have handles that are too long or have flat scoops that causes imbalances. One note, though: it arrived almost as-is. Basically, somebody taped some packing around the shovel part, stuck a mailing label on it and mailed it. The handle was exposed and unprotected.
