I spend roughly 1/3 of my time pounding on wood gouges, one third doing final shaping with rasps and rifflers and one third sanding. For final shaping, I prefer hand stitched rasps and rifflers. The cut faster and leave wood smoother -- meaning less sanding. And yes, I have used a hand stitched 3/8 inch rat tail rasp. But honestly, I seldom need a rat tail for sculpting. There are two tight areas in the current piece where I used the rat tail -- you can see both spots in the picture. A hand stitched 3/8" rat tail would cost more than a hundred dollars more. The one I got from Amazon is aggressive and the handle is comfortable. I'm very satisfied.
