All spinning hard drives I'm aware of require two connections - data and power. This adapter supplies only the data connection. The power connection must come from another source. I don't have a loose hard drive to test this device right now - I'll amend this review if it doesn't function as advertised. The copy says the power supply is not included. Now readers know 'the rest of the story'.Edit: I attached this device to an old 10 GB. PATA drive with an Xubuntu install on it. Booted from the 10 GB drive and things worked as expected. It was slower than a SATA or PATA connection of course but was still quite usable. So Ops checked good! If I were planning to use this device much, I'd make an 'extension' with male & female Molex ends and SATA-Molex adapter. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Device! *by S***1 on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 22, 2014* This is the best low price HDD transfer tool! A lot of people complain about the lack of a power supply,but many of the kits that contain them are faulty and can cause failure of their hard drive, which is why I chose this one. All you need is an old power supply from your failed computer,unless that was the source of the failure. Luckily, the power supply that came out of my dead computer(motherboard failure), the power supply was not that old,and still good. All I had to do was connect a jumper wire from the green wire to the black wire on the ATX plug to make it work. Make sure that you have a drive or at least a fan connected to prevent the supply from shutting down. Then also make sure that the drive is spinning and stays on and then connect the USB on the back port of the computer. Then you can rescue your data. This is a very high quality unit and I would lose important data, music, pictures, and other items without it. A must have! ### ⭐⭐ Does not work with all IDE devices *by S***N on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 10, 2014* Device is not well suited to DVD drives. When the power cable and IDE connection sit close together. So an IDE extender will be needed and is not supplied with the device when this condition exists. Also, the DVD device was readable, but could not write any DVD/CD's even after the device firmware was updated. Attempted to use the device with a Maxtor 8GB drive, and even though it seemed the device was recognized, it was not able to present the device to the OS. So, I ended up putting the drive back in an external USB/IDE enclosure which works fine.
