    A good introduction to ethics

*by A***H on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 27, 2012*

This is a fine introduction to the topic of evangelical Christian ethics. I bought this book as part of a course I am listening to from the [biblicaltraining (dot) org] web site under the course taught by Dr. Ronald Nash on Christian Ethics. On the positive side I think Davis does a good job introducing each topic. I like that he covers a broad range of ethical issues such as abortion, euthanasia, war and peace, capital punishment, divorce and remarriage, etc. He also gives plenty of biblical support for his positions on each issue. The book title is necessarily inaccurate because the label "evangelical" is sufficiently broad in today's culture that not all who call themselves evangelical would agree with his positions. While Davis is aware of this diversity of opinion among evangelicals, he nevertheless makes a pretty strong case for his positions. We might describe his efforts as making the case for the conservative evangelical position. On the negative side the book is necessarily surface level. While each topic is touched on, and is introduced well, those looking for a more in depth treatment on each topic should delve more deeply into other books. The other criticism I have is that the book reads like a textbook. While it is informative, it is not the most engaging of reads.I would recommend this book if only to get your feet wet in the subject matter. It will give you food for thought and will challenge you to think about where you stand on particular ethical issues. While the book has some style issues, for an introductory textbook on Christian ethics, this book will serve the reader well.

    A thorough, faithful, insightful masterpiece

*by C***H on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 27, 2005*

Davis is an author who I am proud to call a fellow "Evangelical" Christian. He does a good job of debunking the myth that faithfulness to the Bible's doctrine is equivalent to intellectual decay. Actually, Davis is engaged with considerable empirical research. He shows a side of scientific development and insight that is often deleted from media outlets because it seems to confirm the truth of Scripture. Davis weighs in on issues that are extremely difficult. However, his formula for discerning the best ethical choice is straightforward and effective. The Scriptures take their rightful place as the central ethical standard for Evangelical Ethics. An investigation into scientific development, Biblical scholarship, and changing societal mores together yields a thorough investigation of some of the toughest issues of our day, including poverty, sexuality, and abortion. Davis is a great inheritor of the legacy of Machen and other Evangelicals that saw the doctrines of Christianity as timeless truths that could be repeatedly proven in the practical matters of everyday life. This is a great book.

    Evangelical Ethics

I found this book very helpful for answers to many questions about modern issues for christians and what the bible has to say regarding them. Sometimes it helps to have a book like this to help those who are facing difficulty in their life and show them the verses in the bible to clear up any misunderstanding of what we are to do as christians with our lives and choices.
