But it turns out the book and movie have almost nothing in common.This is a "choose your own adventure" book, one in which you play a character and make various choices. These choices lead to different parts of the book and different story lines and outcomes. The character played in this book is a young Regency-era woman looking to make a good marriage. Like I said in my title, definitely not for most guys and definitely not for me.But leaving audience aside, let's look at this from the standpoint of Austen fan-fiction. It does incorporate settings and ideas from the Austen canon, although not in an especially brilliant manner. It seems sort of forced, despite quite an effort on the author's part. The book's story lines are weak and trite, although perhaps some fun if you're in the target audience. There are some highly un-Austenlike endings and scenes, at least one of which is very off-putting and completely spoils the mood and atmosphere.Do I recommend this book? Not really, unless you want something completely different and non-linear in approach (meaning branching story lines and alternative endings). Certainly don't make my mistake and think it has anything to do with the movie. There is much, much better Austen fan fiction out there. Start with Laurie Viera Rigler, for instance, and get much more out of your reading time. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ADDICTIVE *by K***Y on Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on November 9, 2021* It helps if you know the original story BUT it's not necessarily to read/play. You do not need to keep score. Maybe flip a coin if it asks you if you don't have enough points to continue. I had a lot of fun keeping score bc I like RPGs. But you can just play without doing so, and it's no less fun. I loved it one day in sent one to my Austen loving friend on day two, and she was thrilled. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ a very fun adventure *by B***R on Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on September 8, 2007* I grew up with "choose your own adventure" books, so the concept of this book is a very familiar one to me.This book is a very good introduction to Pride and Prejudice, and, by way of some side paths, pieces of several other Austen novels. In choosing one path or another, answering one way or another, or simply reading along, the reader is treated to facts about the Regency period, a deeper insight of Austen's characters (especially Elizabeth Bennet), and, often, a good laugh.I would recommend this to YA girls attempting to read P&P the first time. It's a good accompaniment as it really does expose a deeper level of P&P that many readers might miss. Also it's a good laugh for Austen fans.
