    Comprehensive and terrific

I'm still working my way through this massive and beautiful 3-book set, but my initial impression is not only does it present a staggering number of images--most of which are previously unseen by the public, but that the printing and reproduction quality are first-rate. even at the $250 I paid as a pre-order, it's still very pricey. and it seems likely, given purchase price and what I'm guessing are limited runs, to go out of print quickly. so, if you're an Eggleston fan looking for "new" images and can afford it, I'd recommend it highly.one minor disappointment, though, is the number of photos previously published in the "Democratic Camera" catalog as well as in, I believe, "Ancient & Modern" and "Faulkner's Mississippi." knowing the book represents a selection from 5k images, I'd have preferred to have all unpublished photos, but a minor quibble--I'm just happy to be able to see pictures.here's hoping Steidl next publishes the photos from Eggleston's '76 trip to Plains, Georgia. last I'd heard they and the Trust were discussing it.

    William Eggleston Chromes

It's only January 2012 as I'm writing this review and I'm sure this will be on my top 10 list of art/photo books of the year. For Eggleston fans this is a treasure trove of "Guide" era images filled with full-color imagery. Where the "Guide" comes in at 112 pages this slipcased set of three books is a massive 728 pages. The printing is excellent and the format is a large 16 x 17 inches. Yes, not a typo, 16 x 17 inches. This is like owning a huge portfolio of Eggleston prints to enjoy in your own home. While I love the Guide facsimile edition being able to see Eggleston's images produced in this large format is a real treat. If you love Eggleston's photography this is easily the best publication since Eggleston's Guide and highly recommended. Is it worth the price? Yes! Five stars all the way.

    Finding his way

A wonderful and very welcome reprint of 'Chromes', which was originally published by Steidl in 2011 (and these first edition copies are alarmingly expensive). A box set of three books with 432 pages and 344 Eggleston photos. Several of these have been published before, especially in the now well-known 'William Eggleston's guide' (1976) and 'Ancient and modern' (1992).The first photo in book one is the head, shoulders and pillow of the sleeping man, and the last photo in book three is virtually the same shot only this time his eyes are open and looking at the camera (has the book's editor assumed that all these intriguing photos will have opened the reader's eyes?). Eggleston is now considered the master of making commonplace come alive with his photos. They were taken in Memphis and the surrounding countryside between 1969 and 1974 with about sixty percent as exterior shots of a slightly decaying man-made America. The colors can vary enormously suggesting that the photographer was finding his way with compositions and color. His famous shot of the red ceiling and one bulb light fitting is repeated in book three (page 117) but this time the ceiling is a vibrant blue. What I really liked about these books is their large size (twelve and a half inches square) so that the photos even with their generous margins are equally large and printed with a 175 screen. It's such a pleasure to look at great photos presented in this format. You can look inside the book at Westread Book Reviews then click 2022 and November.
