A very short read the story moves quick and there is plenty of action with only implied violence. Originally made for a class to read through in a week there is five med to long chapters with a good breaking point for parent/teacher conversation after each one. There are many Catholic/Christian references in the childrens games which is not surprising considering the era and that they are cared for by a Nun. References easily understood if you know/lookup basic bible stories. Less than 100 pages. As a teacher I am always on the lookout for books that are challenging but not overwhelming to the reader. This book is set during WWII , at a school in the country in France. Students had been sent there to live as a place safer than the cities. One day They are asked to keep Jewish children there to. This book does a wonderful job of showing aspects of the war children may not have thought of- food shortage, children hiding from Nazis, separation from parents.
