Normally there is a vertical blade in steel peeler, however I actually like the horizontal alighment as it makes it easier to peel potatoes (you don't have to bend your wrist as much or twist the potato)2) Lightweight. For those who are used to the heavy rubber steel peelers, than this peeler is not for you. But the lightweight design makes it more maneuverableNot sure what the other reviewers are complaining about when it comes to thick peels. I noticed no difference between my steel peeler and ceramic peeler. It's actually very thin and not at all thick peels, but I think one person was a very picky foodie type (you can't please everyone I guess!) And not sure if the other reviewer was correct in his assertion that 1/3 of the weight was peeled off, as intuitively, 1/3 of the weight is an awful lot of peelings and doesn't make sense to me personally.
