A Great Protective Case for the Nexus 5 (as long as you get the new version of the case)

*by A***E on Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2013*

Update for anyone having issues with the power button...Spigen SGP left the following comment on this review: "If you are having issues with your power button, we'll send you a replacement part to fix these issues, we'll have them around November 11 for shipping! Just send us your order number and let us know your issue through Amazon messages and we'll be happy to assist you get a fully functioning case."Review follows...----------------------Updated 11/18... see below(original rating 5/5)I've always been a fan of dual layer cases, as they always seem to be much safer than snap-on plastic or flimsy TPU cases, however there has always been a price to pay for these cases... they add a very significant amount of heft to your phone. This is the first dual-layer case I've had for any phone that is almost as thin as a single-layer case. The inner TPU layer has two advantages to the standard, silicon inner layer of other dual layer cases: first, it's much firmer, so it should pull away from the edge of the phone much less than silicon, and second, it's not as "sticky" as silicon, so it should not attract as much lint. There is a slightly rough edge on the top of the phone that is a result of the molding process, but it is even across the width of the phone and not annoying enough for me to want to do anything about it (I've seen some pretty poorly molded TPU on my previous Nexus 4 cases). The outer polycarbonate layer is very sturdy and has a high-end soft touch feel to it, and is perfectly smooth (with the exception of the logos, which are engraved... and very clean and professional looking). This is a clean, slick case that I'll be proud to put on my Nexus 5 when it arrives Monday (11/4). I will update the review with fit information and second impressions Monday evening.---------------------------------------UPDATED 11/4 (1/5):This case was a PITA to put on properly, but I stuck through it because I won't normally be putting it on and taking it off that often. Once I managed to get it on I was dismayed to find that, while the volume buttons functioned perfectly fine, the power button was firm as a rock. The phone kept registering the button as being pressed.I struggled with the case for a few minutes trying to shove the phone around inside it, and managed to find a position where the button was at least not fully depressed by the case, but even in that position the phone was registering phantom button pushes, and if you pressed the plastic layer near the button it would register as a press. For the record, the issue is with the plastic outer shell. The button seems to line up just fine with the inner shell.I'm going to try to stay positive and I'm ordering a replacement to see if this is just an issue with the one case I received, but for now I unfortunately cannot recommend this case, as the phone is pretty close to unusable with it on.---------------------------------------FURTHER UPDATED 11/4 (2/5):Comments on this review have indicated that this is probably a defect with the case I received, so giving Spigen the benefit of the doubt and bumping it up a star. My replacement case is scheduled to arrive on Wednesday, and I will update this review then with results. IF IT FITS this is definitely a five-star case for me.---------------------------------------UPDATED 11/6 (2/5):Received my replacement case and it has the same issue. Will be contacting the seller and waiting until they can ship me the replacement part, as I really want to use this case.---------------------------------------UPDATED 11/14 (3/5):After reading S. Berube's review, I made the same modification to the case and now it is functioning normally. Basically, if you look at the inside of the power button shell on the inner TPU layer, you'll see a thick block of TPU that's designed to press the button down. Shave a thin layer off of this (I found wire snips worked quite nicely for this) and it should give the button the wiggle room it needs when in the outer shell. Still not too thrilled that I had to alter the case to make it work, but at least I can use it now while waiting for the "official" fix.Upgrading to 3/5 pending arrival of the replacement part offered by Spigen SGP.---------------------------------------UPDATED 11/18 (5/5):After (finally) receiving the replacement inner TPU layer, I can say that this case is now (finally) living up to my expectations, and I'm as happy with it as I was before finding out that the original version was messed up. Fit is perfect (now), and it doesn't add too much bulk to the phone.Revising rating to 5/5 for the new version of the case. If you are having power button issues contact the seller for a replacement.

Looks great, feels good, fits nicely!

This is an excellent case. It is very easy to slide the phone into the case, and it requires just a little extra effort to remove it. The case is a tight fit all around. It feels sturdy and makes the phone easier to hold/grip with its more angular shape. Both the TPU and polycarbonate sections of the case are of good quality and feel nice to hold. Neither layer is a dust magnet, and neither leaves any finger print markings. Inside the case, the power button requires just a soft press, while the volume rocker requires about twice the pressure. The camera lens is protected and embedded ~1.5 mm within the casing. The cutouts for the headphone jack, charger port and speakers are well-made. On the back, there is a tiny nub at each corner to lift the phone ~0.3 mm above a flat surface. Last but not least, the design also deserves some praise. Champagne is an excellent color that stands out without looking obnoxious. And the framing of the champagne-colored polycarbonate is aligned with the top and bottom bezels of the phone. Nice. For those curious, I uploaded a few pictures showing up-close views of all four sides and overall views of the front and back.IMPORTANT NOTE ON INSTALLATION!!!The case is best to be installed as is! Do not separate the two pieces (TPU and polycarbonate) and put them on individually. You'll be more prone to make odd fittings with one area more tightly snugged than it should be, possibly affecting the buttons. I, myself, have yet to take them apart, and don't plan to. The case is very easy to install with both pieces together/intact. I can't speak for the users experiencing the case being too tight around the power button or the TPU being misshapen, but I can only assume. If those installations were done piece by piece, then that may have been the reason for the problems. Then again, it could very well be a manufacturing error on some products. Since this case IS a tight fit, just 1 mm off would be enough to effect the sensitivity of the power button.

Very nice, not annoyingly grippy case.

It's been a month, and I'm loving this case. It feels quite sturdy, but very slim. I've always bought OtterBox Defenders/Commuters prior, and would have been likely looking at an Otter Commuter case, but Otterbox doesn't play with the Nexus 5. Their loss. Ultimately I'm happy they didn't because I went this direction with Spigen instead. The packaging for the case was very professional, and the case itself is nice and simple. It's a two-part system, with an internal rubber-ish surround with an external harder plastic (which is almost rubberized-feeling as well) that holds the surround into place.Despite the rubbery feel, the case does not stick to the inside of my pocket, like other cases (or even some Commuter Otterbox cases), but is not slippery. I never feel like I'm going to drop it. It also is not a complete lint-magnet.The biggest downside is that I don't know how long the inner layer will remain "tight" to the phone. The harder plastic outer part that holds the inner case in place does not hold on the top and bottom of the phone... it only 'hugs' from the sides. This seems sufficient, but it's been 5-6 weeks and so it's hard for me to judge if it's going to loosen up. I have not taken it in/out of the case at all since getting for this fear. A couple times I've managed to pop a corner out of the case, after it was in my pocket or something. This case works very well with Spigen's glass screen protector. I do get a bit of dust accumulation between the edge of the glass and the case, but it's not big deal and isn't really noticeable. The headphone jack is big enough for my headphones I have, but I did find that a couple full-sized plugs (audio aux cables, speaker cables) don't fit without being trimmed down. But I've had to trim down the 3.5mm plugs on multiple cords for numerous other devices/cases/situations, so it's no big deal to me.It's cheap, it's slim, I'm happy.
