It is made of hard plastic and what the pictures don't show is that there isn't a lip to hold the laptop on it and there are two "legs" at the top corner to hold the pad at a stand angle. What this means is that if you put this on a table, the downward slop actually allows my HP Envy Touch to slip off the stand quite easily. Plus if you use it to hold the laptop on your lap (to avoid the heat form the laptop to heat up your lap), the plastic legs dig into your flesh legs. I hate it.
