As a woodworker I can tell you that the best screws in the world will snap like crackers if you don't drill the appropriate diameter and depth pilot holes first. Even then if you drive them in with a drill driver too fast or deep this can still happen, especially into oak or other hard and dense woods and other materials. A little paraffin wax applied to the screws helps immensely.
