Eventually, it stopped working. I have been on a quest to replace it ever since--about six years now. The main thing I've learned by trying so many other alarms is--it's hard to find a good, basic, no-frills, reliable alarm clock.Some alarms lose time. Some snooze for 10 or 15 minutes, which defeats the awakening process. Some are loud and/or obnoxious while others are barely audible. One couldn't keep time, AND after it fell off my nightstand--for the first time--the numbers became unreadable. A LOT are not Indiglo, and the backlights are so bright they could double as airstrip lighting; I've had to make them covers to dull the light so I could go to sleep.I finally gave up finding a suitable replacement at local stores, and started alarm clock shopping online. After comparing features, reading reviews, and checking carefully for 1) battery powered operation 2) no constant backlight and 3) regular old-fashioned only lights up when you push the button (Indiglo), I chose this Elgin travel alarm.I've used it as my only alarm for several weeks now. It works better than the (many) others I've tried.Pros1) no cords (especially good, since it is sold as a travel alarm)2) audible, obviously an alarm, but the sound isn't TOO grating3) lightweight4) the stand covers the button, so if you were traveling instead of using it as a regular alarm (like me) it wouldn't end up draining the batteries by being pressed down the whole time5) it appears to keep time appropriately (so far, anyway)6) the numbers are large enough to read without my glasses7) red locator light is handy8) low priceCons1) it only has a 4 minute "snooze" between alarms2) required batteries (2 AAA) do not come with it3) the stand seems flimsy and sticks out pretty far in the back4) the buttons don't slide smoothly, but they aren't too bad5) the Indiglo is slightly too bright--it does take a second or two to be able to see the numbers after hitting the snooze button6) did I mention the 4 minute snooze?I've dropped it off my nightstand a couple of times. I'm not a morning person, and the four minutes pass quickly--I tend to reach out without looking the first couple of times, and have misjudged its location and pushed it off the stand. So far, it remains intact (the stand hasn't even broken off or cracked yet).Overall, it's the best replacement I've found during my years of searching. The four minute snooze is REALLY annoying though; the old Indiglo had a 8 (or 7, I don't remember for sure at this point, so many alarms later) minute snooze interval and that was just about perfect. While not a "perfect replacement," it is obvious they don't make what I'm looking for anymore. I will give up the search and use this Elgin. It is adequate, and certainly does its job. It's hard to sleep when the alarm goes off every time you get comfortable from snoozing it the last time. The alarm tone is loud enough to wake you, but not loud enough to make you cling to the ceiling with surprise. The red light helps locate it when it's ringing (although I have to wait a second for the blue light to go down after pushing snooze before I can look at the time).If it had twice the snooze length (8 minutes), I would give it five stars, since the other flaws are so minor. I might even settle for a six minute snooze. Since it's only four minutes, though, that and all the minor flaws add up to only four stars. ### ⭐⭐⭐ 3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, while it lasted *by L***B on Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2011* I purchased this travel alarm a little over a year ago, and have used it daily (not just for travel) since. It has been a good little alarm, but is dying young. About a month ago (at the 1 year mark) the display started going out. Sometimes a little shake will restore it, only to fade again unexpectedly. I'm debating whether to purchase another. It was fine for its purpose while it lasted. The ascending alarm is plenty loud enough for me (and I prefer a loud alarm). (Some reviewers have complained about a too-soft alarm, combined with a red flashing alarm - note that Elgin makes a different alarm model with those features and identical appearance, so those reviewers have probably posted their reviews to the wrong product.) The snooze button is important to me, and works well. (It doubles as a button to briefly turn on the backlight.) The setting buttons are fairly intuitive, but I wish it weren't necessary to scroll through 24 hours or 60 minutes just to set the time or alarm back a wee bit. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars The Absolute Best Option *by V***A on Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2013* I bought this travel alarm clock to take with me when my brother and I backpacked across Europe. I needed it to be loud enough to wake us, I needed it to have a back-light option, and I needed something battery operated, lightweight and portable.This alarm clock is all of this and more. I used this alarm clock on our 2 month sojourn, and I am EXTREMELY pleased with it. I bought it a year and a half ago, and I have been meaning to come back and write a stellar review ever since. I loved this alarm clock so much on our trip, that it has actually replaced my plug-in alarm clock at home.Why I love it:* Amazing battery life. I put 2 AA batteries in this thing when I bought it a year and a half ago. I have used it every day since then and I have never once changed the batteries.* Smart design. It has a little kick-stand so you can easily see it from the bed. That little kick-stand actually folds back over and becomes a protective cover over all the buttons. This makes it super easy to toss in a backpack without any other objects in the pack pressing buttons, changing the time, etc. PLUS, the cover prevents all the buttons from being mashed, but leaves a convenient window over the screen, so you can still check the time on-the-go.*The two functions that you most need easy access to share one big button: The Snooze and the Light. So if it's dark and you wanna check the time, or if it's buzzing and you need a few more minutes, you're not fumbling for a tiny button, it's super easy.* Loud Buzzer - One of my biggest concerns with a battery operated portable alarm clock was whether it would be loud enough. We could not afford to miss a train because our alarm was so faint we slept through it. That was NOT a problem with this. In fact, not only is this guy as loud as any plug-in alarm clock, it actually has a smarter alarm design.- When your alarm starts it is as loud as a normal alarm clock, but the screen is also flashing a red back-light to the time as it's buzzing.- After about 30 seconds if you have neither turned it off nor hit snooze, the beeping will increase in frequency, as will the flashing.- If, after another 30 seconds to a minute you STILL haven't done anything, the clock (out of great concern for your lateness, no doubt) will start beeping EVEN faster, to the point where it's almost constant and the red flashing will almost give you epilepsy, as the poor clock tries desperately to rouse you from your coma. (Ok, I jest about the epilepsy, but this little guy isn't messing around)I love this alarm feature so much, that I don't even use my plug-in alarm anymore. Literally the ONLY benefit to a plug in alarm over this one is the fact that most plug in alarms have numbers that are constantly lit. So in the middle of the night, if you open your eyes, you can see the time. With this portable guy you'd have to go to all the trouble of extending your arm out of the deliciously soft and warm covers for half a second to push the light button. My solution? I put a normal alarm clock on my husband's side of the bed so I can see the time easily in the middle of the night, and I keep this guy on my side for actual alarm use.So why am I finally getting around to writing this review a year and half later? It's actually because I'm about to purchase another one. Not because the first one died. Nope, that baby is still going strong and getting me up for work each day.
