My yard has pretty decent top soil but like most of Houston I also have slippery grey bayou goo clay under neath most of my yard. We have same weather as most of Florida but we don’t have their sandy soil. I used the 3X3X3 yard butler sod cutter for this project. I have a couple places that are high traffic areas that Saint Augustine will not grow. 95% of my yard is fairly healthy and vigorous St Augustine. However in the 5% area have a huge problem with various weeds in this area including nutsedge. In this test area I’ve noticed that the plugs I planted in more shallow (2.5 inch )hole have really taken off over the past 10 days the ones I planted at ground level 3 inches deep aren’t growing as aggressively. I also noticed that these plugs Come with REALLY sandy soil. The reason I had to plant them higher was due to a hidden concrete barrier for my Pavestone patio. I was concerned that the shallow hole wouldn’t work but to my amazement the runners have taken root and the plugs seam much bigger in 10 days! We also had non stop rain from the beta storm so that probably helped. The barefoot test. While my plugs a still taking root I want to say: This stuff is much nicer to walk on than St Augustine. I hope it spreads! The big questions I now have are the following: 1. Will this grass suffocate weeds like nutsedge and others? 2. Will it be able to compete with wild Bermuda grass and St Augustine? 3. Will it look bad when we get a cold snap? I figured i would try it out in a small area to see what happens. I believe some of the other Q&As states such from the seller. **Q: I have moles, is it best to get rid of them first and the grubs they eat?** A: I had them really bad this Spring also. My side yard has Zoysia (from another place) that’s been in for over 7 years. I noticed that the moles did not go under there as much - not sure why. My neighbor trapped the moles and got rid of them for now. So I’d say yes - get rid of them - they can create havoc on your yard. **Q: How long will these plugs last --unplanted-- if they are removed from box and still watered?** A: I watered my every day fir 3 days and planted them on the third day. They are doing well and have spread from 1 inch to about 5 inches **Q: will this grow in south NJ** A: Yes. Zoysia will grow in the Northeast. That said, it will green up a little later in the Spring and go dormant a bit earlier in the Fall , than it would further south.
