Very useful for coaches and athletes interested in writing their own strength programs.
The titles of the sub-chapters "Why are heavy weights best for increasing Maximum strength", "Why does lowering and not lifting weights produce unique adaptations", What do you think you are doing by adding bands and chains". "How does 1RM increase after training" What determines how often we can train" When is overreaching useful. ....are the types of questions I continued to ask myself after having read many strength manuals. I am writing from the perspective of a powerlifter who writes his own programs. My interest is mostly in strength and in size only as it pertains to strength. Strength is Specific explained several concepts of strength training including the role of eccentrics, lifting speed, volume and lifting range (partials) which has given me many more tools to write more efficient strength programs for myself and others. The book is divided into small sub-chapters which makes it easy to read and also provides a summary or "Takeaway" after each chapter that is very useful in review.

Great read
Very informative book. Very organized book. I love the key take-aways at the end of each chapter and I love that he explains individual concepts multiple times in different chapters.I also love how each chapter title is in question format. If I ever have a question regarding strength training, I bet I will be able to reference it easily in this book.

THE best source for science-based strength training information
The majority of what I've read over the past ten years has been strength-training related, to include 50+ full books on the subject. Never before have I encountered a more dense scientific resource than this book on the matter, and for $3 at that. The book is written in a way that you could browse the table of contents and skip to any part of it without really missing anything. For people like me, who want to read it front-to-back, this can make a lot of sections seem redundant. Despite this though, the knowledge conveyed per page is unmatched. As a note to the strength trainee - there are no program recommendations in here, only general recommendations given based upon the principles and concepts that are explained in detail. The book explores what things can contribute to absolute strength without hypertrophy, and how specific types of strength can be increased for specific sporting applications. I can't recommend this thing enough.

Absolutely MARVELOUS
The best book, the best piece of content on strength. There is no man to go to other than Chris Beardsley if you want to get freakishly strong!

Dense But Not Overly Technical and Very Informative
I though this was well-written for the layman however, it is still dense enough where I will have to reread it a couple times to digest it properly. I am a martial artist so many of the examples apply more to other sports however, some of the ideas can still apply to what I do. I think it's a great read but do know that it is a dense one.

A great Reference book at a great price
This book contains summaries of hundreds of articles on a wide range of scientific research from over eighty years of strength, conditioning and anatomy research. While it does get a bit repetitive at times, I feel the repetition helps the reader to retain the amount of information that can sometimes be packed into even a paragraph. Nevertheless, there is always a summary(Takeaway) section that sums things up nicely and every chapter is only about 3-5 pages. Would highly recommend for anyone working in an exercise science/rehab/prehab/sports field. It will streamline your training

A fantastic and informative book
With enough detail and science to educate, but not so much to be inaccessible to a reader without advanced degrees this book was a great read. Highly recommended for anyone looking to learn about strength, muscle growth, athletic development and many other related topics

Outstanding!
This book would be a great buy at any price. But for a few quid it is an absolute steal. The book is very well written, thorough, and lays out the fundamentals involved in muscle function very nicely. I began the book thinking that I knew a decent amount on the subject, but had my mind changed on multiple topics. It was also interesting to discover the limits of current understanding in some areas. Have just purchased the authors other book on hypertrophy, so hoping for a similar standard!
