## Overview

The Etymotic Research ER2-XR are high-accuracy in-ear monitors designed for audiophiles and professionals seeking extended bass response and superior passive noise isolation of 35+ dB. Featuring CNC-machined anodized aluminum shells, low 15 Ohm impedance dynamic drivers, and a detachable cable system, these IEMs deliver studio-quality sound with enhanced bass presence without sacrificing clarity. Ideal for music, travel, and focused work, they combine durability, comfort, and easy maintenance in a minimalist design.

## Description

The ER2XR is ideal for musicians and audiophiles looking for in-ear monitors that are easy to drive, with added warmth in the bass frequencies. The flat mids and highs, along with the emphasized bass of the ER2XR, will appeal to consumers and audiophiles who like a little more presence of bass. The ER2XR offers Etymotic’s renowned passive isolation, providing 35-42 dB attenuation. The ER2XR shells are made of anodized aluminum, CNC machined with extremely tight tolerances. Using a single dynamic driver allows for a very accurate IEM without the added complexity of crossovers, and helps keep the aluminum body small and slim. Included is a user-replaceable cable. Both ER2 models, the ER2SE and ER2XR, use the same low-impedance dynamic drivers. That means they are easy to drive, and no amplifier is required. The only difference between the 2 models is the tuning of the lower (bass) frequencies. The “Studio Edition” ER2SE is tuned to have a flat frequency response. The “eXtended Response” ER2XR is tuned to have an emphasized bass, adding 1-2dB to the mid-bass and 3-4dB to the sub-bass. ER2XR is favored by those who enjoy the extra bass presence and body when listening to their music. The extra bass is done tastefully without turning the ER2XR into a bass heavy IEM. Accurate Earphone Reproduction When tuning in-ear monitors to accurately reproduce a recording of a live performance, our goal is for the sound hitting the eardrums to be identical to that at the original performance. To achieve this, the acoustic properties of the ear must be factored in. The acoustic resonance and horn effects of the ear change a flat audio signal entering the open ear into sound with a (2700 Hz) high-frequency boost, which is the same response heard at the eardrum in a typical ear. That is the reason for the “hump” in the frequency response graph, which assures the eardrums perceive a perfectly flat frequency response for all frequencies.

Review: Fantastic IEMs, though comfort is ear-dependant. - Damn, I love these IEMs. They isolate amazingly well; airplane noise, screaming children, and other distractions disappear, even if you aren't playing anything through them. As for sound quality, they are fantastic; flat, but punchy. They are dynamic drivers, not balanced armatures like the ER3 and ER4, but they still have great technicality. I imagine comfort might be hit-or-miss for people though, since they have a deep fit which some people's ears might not appreciate. Also the included eartips are horrible, I've heard some people prefer them, I am not one of those people. Get the Comply P-series eartips; they might color the sound, but they are so much more comfortable; I often forget I'm wearing them. Cable noise can be an issue if you wear them down, since they conduct vibrations from your clothes, beard, etc straight into your ears, so I normally wear them up, hooking the wires over my ears, which kills any vibrations.
Review: Blessed relief from garden machinery whilst working from home! - During lockdown I have learned that my neighbours are very fond of two-stroke garden machinery, which is extremely noisy and has been making it difficult to concentrate whilst working and studying from home. The Sennheiser open back earphones which I usually listen through are lovely, but by design just aren't effective at blocking out external noise... enter the Etymotic ER2s! The passive noise isolation that the triple- flanged eartips provide, coupled with excellent sound quality provides new found and much needed bliss! The soundstage obviously isn't what you get from open backed earphones, but is still very good and to me the signature is rich and balanced with a noticeable hint of bass. I assume this is the 'XR' component. The blue anodised IEMs look and feel like a premium product although in common with other reviews I'd agree that the cable is ok but nothing special (at least it is replaceable though). The deep insertion of the earbuds takes a little getting used to, but I personally don't find these uncomfortable and this seems a fair trade-off for the superb level of noise isolation. In the longer term, I think these are going to make rail journeys and flights much more tolerable as well... money well spent!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Length of unit?**
A: Including the triple flange eartips but excluding the cable connector it's roughly 25mm (1 inch)

**Q: How do these deal with noisy/loud environments?**
A: These are perfect for noisy environments, you won't be able to hear any outside noise.
I was at an indoor Netball games and could not hear any of the high pitched whistles being blown at all.
These IEMS are really good.

**Q: Are these geared more towards professionals? Im a casual listener, but I'm looking to upgrade to something more serious than regular cheap earbuds.**
A: Speaking as a professional, yeah they have a pretty neutral and accurate sound with very good isolation, which I greatly appreciate because I can't stand exaggerated consumer-oriented sound signatures. It sounds better than anything else remotely close to this price. However, to achieve this great isolation and accuracy, you have to use those 3-flange tips and insert them properly (very deeply-as deep as they'll go). It takes a bit getting used to and may present a comfort issue for some, but for me, it wasn't a big deal and I got used to it quickly with no discomfort.

**Q: Are the foam or silicone flange tips more effective at noise isolation?**
A: I find the triple flange silicone tips better in my ears. But I have narrower than normal ear canals so the foam does not fit very well.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Outstanding, but prepare to abuse your earholes
*by A***W on 9 August 2022*

Ah the Etymotics, infamously known for their sound and value. However, be warned that you must be happy to plant these deep in your earholes. Renowned for their uncomfortable and intrusive fit, some will survive, but personally I could not manage and had to return. I thought I would have loved these, at the time I was using triple flange silicon tips on other IEMs so thought I was already used to an Etymotic style fit, but boy howdy was I wrong. Maybe it's my small ear canals, but I don't think I ever managed to plant these deep enough. However I certainly got close as they sounded amazing, quite bassy for a neutral IEM, but in a good way. Amazing clarity and tuning, slightly bassier than my Moondrop Starfields, and just really smooth and clean. Probably the best IEM I've used so far, just amazing presentation. However I couldn't live with them in the end and have since settled on Moondrop Arias. Worth trying for sure, but be prepared to return if you can't suffer the fit.
