Loads DJI Phantom 3 Pilot App, Ok first impressions. [UPDATED 7/7/15]

*by F***. on Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2015*

I have been reviewing inexpensive tablets for two purposes: a video player for my kids on long flights, and a larger screen for my DJI Phantom 3 Advanced.I selected this over other ones because of these reasons:1) it has 1GB ram (most have 512MB)2) it has bluetooth 4.0 (so I can connect to a speaker for pandora, most have BT2.0 or nothing)3) it has GPS (which is useful for google earth as well as the DJI -- assuming they release the ground station version for P3A)4) Quad core (some are dual core)5) Battery is rated from 5 to 8 hours -- this one I can't confirm yet because I just got it -- but some are rated for 4.Actual use experience:It's bright. Really bright. And I was able to dim it just like any android. I read reviews where there was some issue.Screen is great, and I thought I would dislike the bezel more, but it gives the unit an easy place to hold without 'tapping'.Only has 2.4ghz wifi, but that's ok. It downloaded the 120MB apk from DJI very quickly and loaded fine.DJI app works great, though I haven't been able to fly (raining) yet.Snappy, though waking it from sleep takes a hop. I'm not sure if it's because of some kind of animation or what, but it's not laser fast, but not a problem. The screen has a film on it that makes it fingerprint-proof sort of. It has a kind of grit to it. Again, not good or bad, just different.I stuck a 32GB microSD in it and it took it without a glitch. Haven't tried a 64 yet. Now, I'm being very honest about all of this; I truly like this tablet and for $80 it's a total bargain. Most negative reviews are about dead-on-arrivals or delivery issues. I can't review how easy (or not) it is to deal with returns, but Dragon seems to be a more popular brand of the lesser-known, inexpensive tablets. I was considering the Asus MeMo, the NeuTab 7 and 9, Lenovo A7-40, and a few others, but none had all of these specs and/or positive reviews. But in full disclosure, the reason I'm writing a review at all, regardless of positive or negative, is because they have a deal where if you write a review, they'll give you a free case. I'm not a case guy, but my kids are animals and even $80 is worth protecting from them. I don't write reviews, typically, and I would write a bad review without a second thought if I felt I was ripped off.I'm giving it 5 stars for now until 1) I can confirm battery life, 2) I get a good flight experience with DJI Pilot (the reason I bought it), and 3) it still works the same in a month. I wish I could give it 4.5, really. If any of the above conditions aren't quite right, I'll be back to amend my review.UPDATE ( 6/21/2015 )I was able to fly my DJI finally. The pilot app works. However, the display is choppy. Clearly the CPU and/or GPU cannot keep up with the DJI's photo stream. It's not useless, but it's clearly skipping a lot of frames -- like 5-10 fps. I'm going to try to overclock or remove any processes since this unit should be able to keep up. My Samsung Galaxy S5 handles the video perfectly. Until I figure out how to speed it up, I'm going to drop the stars to 4.UPDATE (7/7/2015)Last week, while giving it another go at DJI Pilot, it got into a weird state (unresponsive, laggy). I've had about 8 Android phones so far and I'm a software architect, so I used my professional experience to reboot the damn thing and see what happens. It didn't wake up. It got stuck in the boot screen animation. It stayed there until it ran out of juice. I plugged it in, charged it back up and powered it on... same thing.I emailed the vendor, instead of rushing here to complain about it first. They replied as follows:"In this case, please download the PC tool and firmware according to your tablet SN on our website Support-Dragon Touch MTK.http://www.tabletexpress.com/support.phpAnd follow the re-installation video on YouTube by searching ' TabletExpress"They responded quickly, but with too little information once I began. Serial numbers didn't match anything on their site. After a few emails, they told me what to download, but it didn't match exactly either. The third email I got was just a YouTube post of what to do... which is great if I had all the tools to do it. Turns out that TOO(l) -- which is a folder containing USB drivers and required to boot the box into downloader mode-- isn't in the M8 firmware zip. On a hunch I downloaded the M10 firmware zip and found the drivers there. After that revelation, everything went smoothly for the OS wipe.TL;DR: they mean well, but their lack of communication skills and rather disorganized support section will leave you a little upset should something to wrong. Don't get me wrong, they definitely respond within a few work-hours. But the response is not quite as useful as it should be. Still worth $80, but only as a kids tablet. Now, why did it get stuck in bootloop and will it happen again?...UPDATE#2Looks like it may be the Pilot App that is laggy and the problem, according to this forum: http://forum.dji.com/thread-16777-21-1.html Once DJI releases a new firmware/app I'll re-evaluate. If it works, I'll bump the stars back up to 4.

    Better than expected

*by O***R on Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2015*

I bought this last August 2015 and I did not want to review this until it had some use. You really cannot go wrong with this if you are looking for an inexpensive tablet. It picks up my wi-fi fine, the battery last a long time unplugged, the display is very good, as people have said ...you can see it from all angles. I have not have a problem with not having gorilla glass. I have dropped it and it has survived. The keys are responsive (which is very important!). Camera is lacking of course. Sound is good.. meaning clearly audible, not stereo (but what tablet is?) But if you just need something that won't break the bank to surf the internet, play games and check your social websites, this may be the vehichle for you. If I needed another for a gift, I would repurchase.Well...after a year the charging port gave out. Took it apart and used Youtube vidios to try to resuscitate to no avail. So have a backup ofyour apps if you need a cheap tablet for 12 bucks a month. It was very usable while working. Pretty good for a low end, but just factor in the life-span of this product.

Better than the price would suggest

I purchased this tablet after reading many reviews and comparing many different types. I can honestly say that for the price this little gem works much better than I had hoped! The first thing I noticed and loved was that as soon as I added my micro SD card it asked if I wanted to put all of my downloads there instead of on the tablet itself, which a lot of products won't do(including my S*****G phone).I've got a lot of games and apps on here and can play easily with no lag issues. I've streamed video and watched downloaded content seamlessly, and amiable to type fairly fast with both hands with minimal errors. I was also very happy that this tablet wasn't overloaded with bloatware. 😀 The tablet was able to connect to my and my partner's phones via Bluetooth and NFC very easily. I haven't had much spare time to poke around with many of the settings, but so far the battery life is pretty good. I usually get about eight hours of heavy play time right now, but I'm still training the battery. This isn't the type of device to leave on the charger 24/7.The screen does get scratched super easily, but shame on me for not immediately getting a screen protector. Cameras are also not great but that's what my phone is for.Overall I'm very happy with this tablet, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a basic tablet at a really great price!
