A Great Manga Ruined By Poor Direction

*by Y***N on Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2019*

I am a huge Lovecraft fan, and picked this series up because it truly seemed to be dealing with the themes and ideas that Lovecraft often dealt with, but on a more personal and fun level. Watching Chiyo, a being that is comprised of only extremes, slowly struggle to find a middle gorund has been incredibly pleasing, all the more due to the hints that this middle ground is subjective, and likely to be horrifying for Yuu. At least, it was until this volume.Let me also say that I have nothing but praise for the art and design for this series, and everything I want to highlight here has to do with the interminable direction, or lack thereof, that this series seems to struggle with.Hints, hints, and even more hints! That is how I can sum up this volume, and perhaps series, as a whole. It's hinted that Chiyo is coming to reconcile her eldritch nature with modern times, it's hinted that Yuu is starting to get corrupted by Chiyo's nature, it's hinted that there will be a climax of some dark nature sometime in the future. Well, that's what happened in volume 1, and nothing's changed at all by volume 3. I can understand that the author might wish to take some time to slowly whittle away at the dark themes this series is writing in, a la Lovecraftian style, but the only thing being tested by now is my patience. "Some time" doesn't mean 3 volumes where, even if the art is great, the characters remain largely undeveloped and static, having some dark past but unable to even try to break out of it. Which is abwsolutely FINE, if we haven't been watching the two same characters diddle around all day, with a few spoopy moments to remind you that, yes, this is based on Lovecraft lore. The madness chittering overhead is probably a broken light fixture, because you're getting nothing but tedium from the same rote for each volume. It's like a slice of life, but nowhere near as funny or cute because that's not what the author wants us to focus on. If you intend on continually hinting that something's going to happen, something that will truly expose the corrupt relationship between Yuu and Chiyo, then show do it, stop foreshadowing the nonexistent. And then, to thumb one final insult at us, the volume ends on a cliffhanger, one that was finally, finally going to explain the link between Chiyo and Yuu's family (or at least, someone like Chiyo). But nope, you get to wait another few months for something that, at this point, is likely to be anticlimactic because every scenario has been played out, either by Chiyo on another monster, or in another series. Lovecraft has come to unconsciously dominate fiction nowadays, and this series seems unaware that Bloodborne, with all its gory betrayals and twists, and Nyaruko, poking fun at common tropes and Lovecraft seriousness, already exist. Thos merely being the most popular in either direction, but the market is already saturated by tons of in-betweens. And, perhaps the most galling thing, the cliffhanger seems (and I stress seems) to be hinting at a possible harem, or rival, situation? To avoid spoilers, I can only say that the character introduced at the end of this volume is far too focused on to just be thrown away as a one-time villain or plot device. I cannot be sure, but given that even after 3 volumes Chiyo still hasn't been flushed out to an acceptable degree, I hold little hope that even if our new girl gets added to Yuu's household, they will likely be shunted off to the side as well.In short, while avid fans are likely to enjoy the continued (and strong) reinforcing of the series' groundwork, to me, it seems no one has cared to put up a wall, and rain in on the forecast. I will stick around for one more volume, in case something actually happens to progress the plot, but it seems that, though this series be comic, the joke is indeed on the readers, and I have stopped laughing.

A Niche Title A Niche Review

*by C***O on Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2019*

The Elder Sister-Like One is a slice of life. Following life adventures of Yu and his sister Chiyo. Who happens to be a demon that Yu made a pact with to be his older sister. First and foremost those expecting a horror or dark fantasy story will be sorely disappointed as at its core the series is a slice of life. How Chiyo an ancient demon is trying to integrate to human society and be an older sister to Yu. Filled with fan service and I suppose siscon elements even though Chiyo isn't human but it can be off putting to some. In this volume it focuses on Yu not being open enough with his issues causing his sister to doubt herself. These moments are all in between slice of moment such as chiyo getting drunk and wanting head pats from Yu and Yu taking a bath with his demon sister in a fan service friendly scene. With the next volume setting up a new conflict with another demon. Ultimately I enjoyed The Elder Sister-Like One for what it is a fan service friendly slice of life. Recommendations are a different matter entirely as it's a niche title and this series won't everyone's cup of tea. At the time of this review there is no other media besides the manga. If you enjoy the slice of life genre and don't mind fan service than give a read. If you expect some horror or lovecraftian twist than I would skip the series.

Chiyo is still working on the concept of boundaries

*by R***R on Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2019*

For much of this series, it has been the story of Yuu, a lonely boy and Chiyo, the supernatural being who granted him the wish of becoming his elder sister. This volume has its comic moments as Chiyo is still trying to figure out the human world. More than once, she shows she still doesn't get the concept of boundaries in relationships, particularly between siblings.Meanwhile, a being named Haru comes on the scene. She looks like a schoolgirl but it doesn't take long before we find out she's dangerous and on Chiyo's bad list. The volume ends on a cliffhanger and one has to wonder if this will lead us to something scary or tragic that Yuu alluded to in Volume 1.
